Child Care Centres
The City provides guidance on the location and development of child care centres to maximise user convenience and maintain a high level of amenity in residential areas. A child care centre is a premises used for the daily or occasional care of children in accordance with the Community Services (Child Care) Regulations 1988. All child care centres require City approval.
Site location
Wherever possible it is preferred to locate child care centres adjacent to non-residential uses such as shopping centres, medical centres/consulting rooms, school sites, parks and community purpose buildings to minimise the impact such centres will have on the amenity of residential areas.
Carparking
- All carparking areas should be located in front of buildings or at least be visible from the entry to the site
- Parking areas should be designed to enable traffic to flow easily through the use of entry and exit crossovers
- A minimum of five carbays plus one carbay per staff inclusive of disabled carbays is to be provided for
Street
In residential areas all new buildings should be set back from the street boundary at least as far as the lesser of the two adjoining residences and if the adjoining lots are vacant set back should be a minimum of six metres. All other setbacks are to be in compliance with the Residential Planning Codes. A copy of the Residential Design Codes can be viewed at Planning WA's website
Landscaping
- All street frontages of the site to a depth of three metres are required to be suitably landscaped
- Verge areas in front of the child care centre should not be paved or sealed, therefore restricting carparking on verges
Advertising
All applications for child care centres must be advertised for public comment.
Signs
Approved child care centres are allowed to display one advertising sign only.
