Signs are required to comply with the requirements of the City’s District Planning Scheme No. 2 (DPS2), its Signage Policy, and its Signs Local Law. A ‘sign’, ‘advertisement’ and ‘advertising device’ have the same meaning.
In addition to planning approval, a sign licence is also required for most signs. Different requirements – in terms of dimensions, area, and location – apply to different types of signs. Please refer to the Signs Policy and the Signs Local Law for further information.
Planning Approval Requirements

A completed MRS Form One (application for approval to commence development) signed by the owner(s) of the land.

Letter of justification for any variations proposed to the Signs Policy.

Three copies of a site plan demonstrating where the sign is to be located.

Three copies of plans showing the dimension of the sign(s) and the wording/graphics that will be included on the sign.

Sign Licence Requirements:
All permanent signs (signs erected for longer than 1 month) require a Signage Licence prior to construction. The following information is to be submitted:

Completed Sign Licence Application Form.

Site plan (applicable where signs are constructed on posts/pylons or are independent of buildings) - two copies to a scale not less than 1:200 indicating site boundaries, existing and proposed levels, all existing structures and the location of the proposed structure and distances to the boundaries.

Elevations (scale 1:100, applicable for applications where signs are to be placed under awnings or on shop fronts) These plans should be fully dimensioned indicating clearances from footpaths.

Construction details showing materials to be used, their respective sizes, spacing and spans.

Connection details to the existing main roof and anchorage to footings, including footing dimensions.

All exposed timbers must be class 1 or 2 or treated to a H3 level.

Engineer’s details may be required depending on the materials used and their configuration.

Temporary Signage
Temporary signs can become a hazard when used incorrectly. There are different types of temporary signs that can be erected:
