Sorrento Beach Enclosure
The City of Joondalup in conjunction with the State Government has installed a beach enclosure at Sorrento Beach, just south of Hillarys Boat Harbour.
There are now two beach enclosures in the metropolitan area, located at Sorrento Beach, Hillarys and Coogee Beach, south of Fremantle. Other enclosures are also located at Busselton, Dunsborough and Albany.
The City is excited to be able to provide a significant facility that will allow swimmers to enter the water with reduced risk of encountering a shark. The beach will be patrolled during normal patrol hours by the local Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club.
The beach enclosure extends from the Hillarys Boat Harbour sea wall to the groyne just north of the Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club. The beach enclosure is constructed in Perth from a robust nylon matrix anchored to the sea floor and held in place by a series of floats. The Supplier, Eco Shark Barrier has designed the structure to create a 'wall' effect that keeps out large marine animals, including sharks and dolphins, but allows smaller fish to pass through the structure. The enclosure will not wrap around or entrap large marine animals and is designed to remain in place all year round to provide an environmentally friendly swimming enclosure for the enjoyment of the general public.
As with all water related activities, the City recommends that you take due care in and around the water, and closely supervise young children.
