Tom Simpson Park Redevelopment
The City of Joondalup Council recently endorsed a draft Concept Plan for the redevelopment of Oceanside Promenade and Tom Simpson Park, Mullaloo.
The main aims of the draft Concept Plan are to improve safety for pedestrians and vehicles along Oceanside Promenade and to provide a safe, secure and family friendly park for the community.
The following issues have been identified in the area:
- Potential for road traffic accidents involving visitors to Tom Simpson Park, pedestrians and passing vehicles due to the absence of a barrier between the park and road and a lack of defined pedestrian crossing points or pathways;
- Shelters and other park furniture are in need of upgrade or replacement;
- Playground equipment is in need of upgrade;
- Lack of safe and level pathways across grassed areas for parents with prams, elderly people or people with disabilities affecting their mobility;
- Degraded turf area and beach access south of the Surf Club; and
- Poor vision of road paving at night time due to lack of efficient lighting.
The proposed works shown on the draft Concept Plan in Related Information aim to rectify these problems by:
- Providing clearly defined, safe pedestrian crossing points for Oceanside Promenade;
- Realigning the shared path and car park in front of the Surf Club to reduce conflict, and to provide for improved pedestrian, cyclist and vehicular movement;
- Constructing a safety barrier which clearly defines where the parkland area ends and the roadway begins;
- Providing new shelters, benches and picnic settings to improve the amenity of the park;
- Providing a new path along Oceanside Promenade for improved pedestrian activity and movement;
- Providing additional trees in existing groves to maximise shade; and
- Formalising beach access south of the Surf Club to stop dune erosion and enable rehabilitation of the dune system.
