Meet the Author
Oliver Phommavanh
Thursday 21 June 2012 @ 5.00pm
Joondalup Library
Children’s Event for ages 9+
Oliver Phommavanh is a fresh and positive voice for multiculturalism. He’s Aussie born and bred, but comes from a Thai/Laotian background.
His first book Thai-Riffic! was published by Penguin in 2010, and has been shortlisted for the Frances Lincoln Diverse Voices book award. His second book Con-Nerd is due to be released in June 2011. Oliver loves to make people laugh, so if your kids are into Morris Gleitzman and Andy Griffiths, there’s an awesome chance they’ll love Oliver’s wacky humour too!
In Thai-Riffic!, the character Albert (Lengy) is fed up with being Thai. His parents own a Thai restaurant with the cheesy name of Thai-riffic! and Lengy is sick of being his father's curry guinea pig, longing to just eat pizza! At school he is a bit of a troublemaker, going to any lengths to hide his background. But when his best friend decides to become Thai for a day for a school project, Lengy stubbornly comes to the realisation that there may just be some pretty cool things about his culture.
Cost: $2 – including refreshments at the end of the session. Copies of Oliver’s book will be available for purchase and signing.
Bookings are essential. For more information or to book please contact the City on 9400 4751.
Previous Events
Woodvale Library's 20th Birthday
A very special birthday party was held for kids to celebrate Woodvale Library's 20th Birthday. Special guest Ola the Magician enchanted the children with an amazing birthday magic show in November 2011.
Other Fun Events
In 2010, we had comical author Andy Griffiths visit Joondalup Library to promote his new book The Very Bad Book, with more bad jokes, bad limericks and bad stories. Whitford Library also celebrated its 30th birthday in September and we invited Josephine and Goggles to entertain children with music, stories and plenty of fun party games.
