Civics and Citizenship
Adopt a Coastline
The Adopt a Coastline program gives students the opportunity to take part in an environmental project involving plant identification, dune rejuvenation and protection of our fragile coastline. This program also allows students to demonstrate active citizenship through their work on this valuable community project.
Students will:
- Work with City of Joondalup Natural Areas Officers planting local provenance species.
- Learn about the biodiversity of the coastal environment, teamwork, contributing to their community and environmental responsibility through active citizenship.
- Understand the important role conservation plays in our future through three class room presentations by environmental experts.
- Have the opportunity to display their classroom work relating to the program within the Joondalup Library.
- Have fun.
In 2011, a total of 120 students from Connolly, Padbury and North Woodvale Primary Schools completed three weeks of coastal dune restoration, planting over 2000 local provenance plants. Each student also attended three presentations in their classrooms ensuring that they understood the important role that conservation plays in our future.
The program is fully funded by the City of Joondalup.
The City of Joondalup Adopt a Coastline program was the winner of the Keep Australia Beautiful – 2010 Sustainable Cities Award in the Young Legends Category.
The program takes place during second term and is suitable for Years 5-7. For further information please contact the School Liaison Officer on 9400 4207.
Civic Education

Your class is invited to visit the City of Joondalup Civic Centre as a component of their study of Government in Australia.
Students will:
- Sit in the council chambers and learn how local government works, the services it provides to the community and have an opportunity to take part in a mock election.
- Learn the difference between local laws and state laws and elected members and council officers and their roles in the community.
- Be able to explore their families’ role in determining the type of community in which they wish to live.
A tour of Joondalup Library can be incorporated into your class visit providing a practical example of a local government service. Transport can also be provided. Worksheets are available for use either before or after the visit.
The public artwork surrounding the civic centre and its relationship to Joondalup is also a feature of this fully funded excursion.

Graffiti Education Resources
The Office of Crime Prevention (OCP) has announced the availability of the Goodbye Graffiti educational resources. The OCP has developed these resources in consultation with Department of Education and Training, Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia and Catholic Education. The teaching resources have been developed for delivery by teachers to students in years 1-10.
The resources educate young people on the consequences of graffiti vandalism to themselves and the wider community, with the goal to prevent future offending through education. The City of Joondalup hopes that local schools may find these resources useful in assisting the City in its commitment to support community safety in local areas.
