The 2014 Joondalup Festival featured a world-class programme of music, fashion, circus, performance and illuminations. The popular Big Top tent (re-named Galaxy) returned to Central Park and was filled to capacity for its winning offer of circus, cabaret and theatre by local, national and international award-winning companies. Highlights included: Cirque No Problem, a vaudevillian circus duo from Israel; Dislocate with their exceptionally fast-paced acrobatics in 3 Speed Crunch Box; Kaleidoscope Ensemble’s musical adaptation of Gus Gordon’s children’s book Herman and Rosie featuring a live jazz band.
2014 marked the debut of the mini top, the Rastelli tent, featuring a range of delightfully short performances that enthralled audiences. The Festival also featured the Eco Stage, a self-powered open air performance space featuring aerials, acrobatics and fire.
Urban Couture returned to the Festival, putting the spotlight on local Western Australian designers, artists, illustrators and photographers. Now in its fourth year, Urban Couture has become a leading program in the Perth fashion calendar.
Music at the Festival bandstand included performances by WAYJO, Nathan Gaunt, The Cottontail Trio & The Supperclub and Stratosfunk and the adjacent Outdoor Dining area was filled with crowds taking advantage of a wide range of quality food with an international flavour.
A two hour downpour on the Saturday led to closure of the Festival site. As a result, Back to Barbershop! a community choral project that brought together over 150 singers performing barbershop harmonic arrangements of classic and iconic songs from Australia and the 1950s was rescheduled to Sunday 30 March as was the Twilight Lantern Parade, a community celebration of light to the theme of Imagining Australia Larger than Life.
By Sunday evening the Festival was back in full swing and turnout was excellent for a breathtaking aerial performance by Fidget Feet (Ireland) for the Festival finale and an impromptu cabaret in the Galaxy tent by performers who had been unable to perform the previous day.
