What is the Mural Arts Program?
The Mural Arts Program funds you or your group to create new mural artworks which reflect the culture and lifestyles of Joondalup. Groups can work with professional artists and use a wide range of artistic styles.
Participants can request a specific site for consideration, or the City can suggest a location.
The Program is a year-round format which means you can submit an application at any time.
The Program objectives are to:
- Encourage community participation in the development of Mural Arts projects within the City;

Introduce a range of mural styles which reflect the diversity of the community’s aspirations and tastes;

Provide community access to high quality mural arts for education and appreciation purposes;

Build on and promote the character and identity of the Joondalup region; and
-
Deter graffiti and vandalism of City property.

1. Who can participate?
Anyone can participate!
The Program encourages the whole community to develop murals that are reflective of the culture and lifestyles of Joondalup. Applicants need to demonstrate a connection with Joondalup. For example, you might live, work or study within the City or you may be an organisation which is based here. The following individuals and groups are examples of those that may be involved:

Schools / childcare groups

Local residents / ratepayers

Referrals from welfare agencies

Local businesses

Recreation, cultural or interest groups

Churches / other communities of faith

Medical / Health and Wellbeing Centres

Friends / Social groups
Applications which represent any of the following groups will be highly regarded:

Participation from large numbers;

Disadvantaged groups; and

Groups which are under-represented by existing murals.
2. What types of murals will be funded?
Many of the existing City of Joondalup murals reflect a distinctive youth-oriented urban style of art, often created with spray paint.This is however only one of many possible types of mural. The City is keen to introduce artistic diversity for future murals, and welcomes all tastes and styles. For example, your mural might be a mosaic piece, a photographic stencil or a large scale drawing. All murals need to use durable and safe materials and have appropriate content, along with suiting the intended location.

As well as working with groups and organisations, the City of Joondalup also coordinates murals directly.
This may be to:

Create a mural on a particular site;

Create a work to celebrate something or as part of an event;

Meet the needs of an identified target group.
No application is required to participate! Just contact us with your details and we will let you know when the next project is occurring.
5. How is the local community consulted about murals in their area?
Before approving the installation of a mural, the City seeks community input. The designs are available for viewing and public comment, with feedback especially sought from those close to the proposed site. Even if your initial application is approved, final installation of the mural can only be confirmed after the consultation process.
6. What does the funding cover?
The funding is available for any reasonable expense associated with creating a mural, such as art materials, safety equipment, administration costs and artists fees.
7. How long does the approval process take?
From the day your application is submitted, it will typically take 8-16 weeks until you can install your mural, if approved. Groups who have specific time restrictions should discuss these with the Visual Arts Officer prior to submitting an application.
