How to become an Elected Member
If you want to make a difference in your community and have a say in local decision-making, stand for election as a local government Councillor in the City's next ordinary election on Saturday, 15 October 2011. This short video outlines the benefits of being an Elected Member.
The date for candidates to lodge a completed nomination paper to the Western Australian Electoral Commission is between Thursday 1 September and 4.00 pm Thursday 8 September 2011. For more information about standing for Council, read the attached publication, which gives practical advice and information about what is expected of an elected councillor and how to become one.
Nomination requirements
Candidates are required to lodge with the Returning Officer:

a single A4 page profile containing not more than 150 words of biographical information about the proposed candidate and statements of the candidate’s policies or beliefs

a nomination deposit of $80 (cash, bank cheque or postal order)

a recent passport-sized photograph (optional).
Where an agent lodges a nomination on a candidate’s behalf, the candidate must fill in the prescribed form with a written authorisation and sign it.
All nominations are to be submitted to the Returning Officer only.

In accordance with Section 4.55 of the Local Government Act 1995 the Returning Officer declared Mike Norman elected unopposed to the position of Councillor - South West Ward.

Disclosure of Gifts
Both candidates and donors are to disclose information about any electoral related gift with a value of $200 or more, that was given or promised within the six month period prior to the relevant election day. For example the reporting period for the 15 October 2011 elections commenced from around April 2011. Ward boundaries and vacancies
The elected Council comprises of a Mayor and twelve Councillors. The Mayor represents all the electors of City, and two Councillors per ward represent those electors that reside within the individual ward. All representatives are elected at large.
