Video Surveillance In Public Areas
The City operates video surveillance in public areas including Tom Simpson Park, Mullaloo and the Joondalup City Centre with the following aims:
- Deterring criminal, anti-social and suspicious activity.
- Capturing and recording high quality, useable images of such activity in progress.
- Assisting with the management of factors that create a fear of crime.
- Supporting the investigations of authorised enforcement agencies.
- Providing a flexible, useful tool that supports the City's management of these areas.
Video surveillance is operated in public areas only and the privacy of resident and business operators is prioritised. Recorded images can only be released to authorised agencies such as the Police.
The City is working closely with a number of WA Police units to gain maximum community benefit from video surveillance. Planning the coverage and targeting of these systems is done through ongoing cooperation with the Police.
The Western Australia Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Guidelines are a key reference for planning the use of video surveillance in local areas. The City has received funding and assistance from the State and Federal Governments towards the development of some systems in local areas.
