Energy tip: Don’t standby and waste power! Switching appliances off at the wall can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 600 kilograms each year.
Everyone can do their bit to reduce energy use and contribute to a cleaner, greener environment. Climate change, caused by an increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, is making us rethink the way we generate and use energy.
The City provides resources to the community to encourage energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy, and is working to reduce energy use in City facilities and operations.
You can learn more about saving energy in the home by attending one of the City’s FREE Think Green – Energy workshops, hosted by Environmental Scientist and ABC TV Gardening Australia Presenter, Josh Byrne, or loaning one of the City's portable power meters.
How does your suburb rate?
The average household in the City of Joondalup used 20 units of power daily (kilowatt hours) in 2010-2011, 15% above the Perth average. Energy use in City households creates 1 tonne more greenhouse gas emissions than the Perth average. Autumn is a great time to turn off your second fridge, and will save that extra tonne of greenhouse gas emissions! Let’s ensure we all do our bit and help our neighbours to reduce energy use this autumn.

Ecostar
The City’s ECOSTAR Program aims to showcase sustainable technologies, which reduce greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption, that can be easily implemented in your home. This is achieved through the retrofitting of City facilities with water and energy efficient products including solar photovoltaic systems, energy efficient and controlled lighting systems, waterless urinals, dual flush toilets, water efficient showers and taps, and through improved cleaning practices. A star rating system is used to highlight the renovations.
The ECOSTAR pilot project saw the installation of a number of sustainable technologies at the Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club amenity block on West Coast Drive, and resulted in the facility achieving the maximum six star rating. Forrest Park Community Sporting Facility on Forrest Road in Padbury also recently achieved the maximum six star rating. In addition, a solar photovoltaic system has been installed at this community facility.
