Funding of $25,000 is available and is shared over 2 funding rounds in 2011/12. These grants aim to assist community groups and schools with projects, events and activities that increase awareness of environmental issues, promote positive environmental behaviour and protect the City’s natural areas.
The following are examples of projects, events or activities that your school or community group may wish to apply for.
- Community garden
- Waterwise garden
- Installation of rainwater tank
- Recycling program
- Waste education
- Composting and worm farms
- Walking and cycling for transport
- Installation of bicycle parking
- Research into native plants and animals
- Bush restoration
- Coast care
- Installation of PV cells
- Events that support environmental days or weeks eg World Environment Day, Walk Over October, 2011 International Year of Forests, 2010 International Year for Sustainable Energy, National Biodiversity Month, Ride2School Day and Groundwater Awareness Week just to name a few!
Here are some real life case studes of projects that have been recently funded through the City's community funding program.
Ocean Reef Primary School Edible Food Garden and Composting
A hands on project where students from Ocean Reef Primary School established an edible garden on school grounds. Students were introduced to the concept of gardening and growing vegetables, using food scraps to fuel a worm farm, using manure from the worm farm on garden beds and collecting and using water from a rainwater tank. Ocean Reef Primary School received funding of $2175.00 to purchase garden beds, seedlings, soil, gardening equipment and a 1500L rain water tank.
Your Guide to Marmion Marine Park
Update of the ‘Your Guide to Marmion Marine Park’ brochure. Friends of Marmion Marine Park conducted free educational and conservation activities for the City of Joondalup community. This resources was used to educate community members at a Beach Littler Cleanup and Littler Survey as well as a Touchpool Demonstration. The project raised awareness of the importance of Marmion Marine Park and why it needs to be protected. The Friends of Marmion Marine Park received funding of $926.00 to print the brochure the ‘Your Guide to Marmion Marine Park’.
Dalmain Primary School Vegetable Garden
Dalmain Primary School established a vegetable garden on school grounds which included 7 raised garden beds, a compost bin and a worm farm. Students harvested vegetables for the school canteen and also used them for a ‘Fruit n Veg’ day. The crops included beans, lettuce, herbs, bok choy, tomatoes and carrots.
Students learnt about the benefits of growing vegetables including healthy eating, reducing waste through composting and a worm farm and reducing food miles by providing the canteen with some fresh produce. Dalmain Primary School received funding of $1000.00 for raised garden beds, soil and tools for gardening.
Study of Freshwater Long-Necked Turtles in Yellagonga Regional Park
A training program was conducted to up skill members of the Friends of Yellagonga to sample long-necked freshwater turtles in Lakes Joondalup and Goollelal. The program studied the status and trends of the long-necked turtle populations within the Yellagonga Wetlands. Members of the Friends of Yellagonga were trained in turtle trapping including measuring, handling and marking skills as well as trap placement. Friends of Yellagonga received funding of $3000.00 for a consultant to deliver training of volunteers and the development of a final research report.
