Concerts and Other Large Events
Concerts, large sporting, cultural and entertainment type events held in the City add vibrancy to the City, commercial opportunities to local traders and are a source of local entertainment to residents.
A lot of these types of events may result in excessive noise emissions. If the event is deemed to be justified a noise exemption may be granted to the event by the City.
In cases where exemptions are given, levels of noise that are considered by the City to be reasonable for the event will be stipulated by the City to the event organiser. These levels are required to be met without exception and monitoring of the event is carried out to ensure that they are.
Residents likely be affected by the event will be informed of the event so that they may be given the opportunity to make other plans on the day. These residents are also advised of a complaint’s telephone line to ring should the need arise.
Community Events
Under the Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations 1997, noise from some community activities are exempt from the requirements from the normal allowable levels.
Exempt noise can include children in school playgrounds, noise from fairs and fetes, crowds at sporting events and church services and community concerts (carols by candlelight etc).
The City can take action over an exempt noise if it considers that the noise impacts are excessive.
