Musical Instruments
Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations 1997
Under the Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations 1997, the playing of a single instrument likely to cause a disturbance to neighbours is permitted provided the following requirements are complied with:
- The musical instrument is used in a reasonable manner
- This includes playing the instrument in a suitable room with all the windows and doors closed, and playing the instrument at the lowest volume possible
- A metal shed does not constitute a suitable room as there is insufficient attenuation of the noise
- In case of drum kits, sound off pads and cymbal silencers are recommended
- Electric guitars should have the amplifier turned down to the lowest level
- The instrument is played for no more than one hour per day
- Between 7 am and 7pm, Monday to Saturday inclusive or
- Between 9am and 7pm on a Sunday or public holiday
- The resulting noise emissions do not unreasonably interfere with the comfort or amenity of the neighbours.
