Planting Street Trees
The City supports residents’ efforts in greening their streets and will supply and plant trees on residential
verges free of charge at the request of the property owner.
Residents may apply to have one or more trees planted by the City on the verge adjacent to their property.
The City does not however permit residents to plant their own trees on the verge.
When?
The City undertakes an annual street tree planting program each year during winter, and all applications need to be made in writing to the City by 31 March of each year to ensure stock availability. The trees will then be ordered and planted in the cooler wetter months.
How Are Applications Assessed?
All applications for street tree planting will be assessed by an officer of the City to determine if there is adequate room on the verge for the tree(s), the number of trees that may be planted, species selection, and any additional site constraints that may be relevant.
Site constraints can include verge width, length and shape, building set back, overhead powerlines, vehicle and pedestrian access, street lighting and sight lines. Solar access also needs to be taken into consideration in the selection of street trees and thought given as to whether evergreen or deciduous trees would be most appropriate for the site.
What Happens Once A Tree Is Planted?
Once a tree is planted on the verge it becomes the City’s responsibility, however, the City relies on assistance from residents who apply for street trees by asking that residents give a newly planted street tree at least one deep watering (40 litres) a week in the dry months for the first three years after planting.
The City has a preferred list from which residents may choose a tree, in consultation with City staff. This will ensure an appropriate tree species is selected for each location. A
