Street Verge Guidelines
A street verge is the area between the road and boundary of an adjacent property. The verge provides a safe pedestrian space and vehicular access to properties. The verge also accommodates public service utilities such as street lighting, bus stops, power, water, sewerage and telephone cables.
The City appreciates the visual amenity afforded by verges that are maintained and improved by residents. Whilst the City is responsible for street trees and enforcing verge requirements, in the case of hazardous or unsuitable installations it is the householders’ responsibility to maintain the verge as it is essential that footpaths, roadways and sight lines remain free from obstructions at all times.
You may install a verge treatment provided it meets the City’s requirements. A Verge Treatment Application must first be submitted to the City and the application approved prior to works commencing. A City officer will then contact you to discuss your application.
The City's Street Verge Guidelines are currently under review. A copy of the draft guidelines can be obtained by contacting the City on 1300 369 972.
