Waste Management

The City’s Waste Management Strategy has been developed using strategic directions provided by the State Government, and is consistent with the City’s Strategic Plan and outcomes from community consultation.

The consultation process highlighted strong community desire for the introduction of a universal recycling wheelie bin for all residents.  This was introduced in 2006 and the recycling sorting plant was upgraded to cope with the extra volumes.

The Strategy is consistent within the State’s strategic direction on Zero Waste and includes the following principles:

  • Prevention – to avoid the creation of waste
  • Recovery – to efficiently recover, re-treat and re-use all waste
  • Disposal – to responsibly manage waste in the environment

The Strategy is also consistent with the City’s Strategic Plan, of which a key focus area is to care for the environment. The associated Strategy looks to efficiently and effectively manage the City’s waste by:

  • further developing and implementing recycling strategies
  • planning for the development of waste management
