UBC Celebrates Clubroom Extension Opening
20/04/2017 8:28:49 AM
The Undercroft Bridge Club (UBC) celebrated the opening of their refurbished clubroom at Percy Doyle Reserve, Duncraig on Saturday 8 April.
Local politicians and dignitaries joined Club members for the special occasion, with Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard unveiling a commemorative plaque to mark the official opening.
The UBC, formed 45 years ago and today boasting more than 450 members, identified that they had outgrown the previous clubroom facility, which was constructed in 1993.
In 2014 the Club submitted an application to the City of Joondalup for a club funded facility upgrade, and the Joondalup Council agreed to undertake these works at its April 2015 meeting.
The refurbishment of the club rooms has resulted in upgrades to the hall, meeting room and toilets, as well as the 11 metre extension to the west of the building, allowing UBC to run morning, afternoon and evening sessions for regular games, lessons, tournaments, meetings and other Club events.
The total project cost was approximately $450,000, which was funded by the City along with UBC, who contributed $140,000.
“The City supports facility refurbishments such as the Undercroft Bridge Clubroom extension as we recognise the very important role that sport and recreation plays in building stronger, healthier, happier and safer communities,” Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard said.
“Our thanks go to Hickey Constructions for their contribution, as well as the UBC, who worked closely with the City throughout the project’s history.”
UBC President Graham Milward said the refurbishment is the culmination of many approaches to the City and years of fund raising.
“The redeveloped clubroom is a tribute to current and past members of the Club, whose stamina and belief in the project never waned,” Milward said.
“On behalf of the UBC I want to thank the City of Joondalup and past and present members of Council for their tremendous support, as well as Lotterywest for their contribution to the fit out of the refurbishment project.
“The Club will now be able to cater for an increased range of bridge playing activities, including additional teaching programmes and possibly mentoring support.”
Competition sessions are held Monday to Saturday at 12.15pm and Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7.15, with a learning session each Saturday morning at 8.30.
