Businesses urged to sign up to safety
6/07/2017 8:08:56 AM
The City of Joondalup will run an education program to encourage the safe and appropriate placement of advertising signs within the Joondalup Business Park, following a growing number of signs being unlawfully placed on verges in and around Winton Road.
Badly placed signs on verges, footpaths, roundabouts, median strips and other public spaces can be a safety and distraction hazard for drivers and pedestrians with the potential to cause accidents.
Letters will be hand delivered to businesses from 10 July 2017, outlining requirements for signs on public land to be approved and authorised by the City.
Patrols will commence in the week after the letter deliveries and officers will talk to business owners and issue written cautions for those who continue to use illegal signage.
Following the education and caution period, signs will be impounded and a $125 infringement issued.
Patrols will continue throughout the year to ensure ongoing compliance.
The City hopes to increase awareness of this important safety measure through its education campaign however businesses who ignore the local law risk a fine and a maximum penalty of $5,000 if determined by a court.
The City’s Local Government and Public Property Local Law (2014) states that placing unauthorised advertising signage on public lands is not permitted.
