Sorrento Beach Wins WA’s Friendliest Beach Award
19/06/2012 11:14:14 AM
One of the City of Joondalup’s most popular coastal attractions has won a WA Clean Beaches Award.
The Awards are run by the Keep Australia Beautiful Council and Surf Lifesaving WA and encourage the care and management of the coast through beautification, education, environmental programs, safety, partnerships and community pride.
Sorrento Beach won the Friendliest Beach category at the Awards, which recognised safety and excellent visitor experiences.
Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard said Sorrento Beach was a very popular location with both local residents and tourists, given its extensive facilities and proximity to Hillarys Marina.
“Sorrento Beach is a wonderful coastal attraction that has beautiful grassed areas, shaded picnic tables, barbecues, viewing platforms, easy-to-access paths and refurbished toilets and change room facilities,” he said.
“Given it is such an attractive and well-maintained beach, weddings and children’s parties are often held on the Sorrento foreshore.
Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club’s Leif Hinrichsen said the beach and its facilities were cleaned regularly during the summer months by the City and that the Club’s many members played a pivotal role in patrolling and keeping the beach safe for everyone.
“The City and the surf club work closely together to ensure the Sorrento continues to be one of the most popular locations along WA’s coastline.”
