20/01/2010 3:17:52 PM
The Cities of Joondalup, Stirling and Wanneroo will again host the nation’s biggest ever citizenship ceremony on Australia Day, with 2500 people expected to become new Australian citizens.
The City of Wanneroo, together with the cities of Stirling and Joondalup, will host the nation’s biggest ever citizenship ceremony on Australia Day, with 2500 people expected to become new Australian citizens.
This will be the third consecutive year that the three Cities join forces to host the North Metropolitan Zone Australia Day ceremony, being held at Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex on Tuesday, January 26 from 9am.
Wanneroo Mayor Jon Kelly, Stirling Mayor David Boothman and Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard will officiate as the 2500 local residents are sworn in as Australian citizens in front of about 5000 family and friends.
The new citizens will represent almost 100 countries from around the world including the UK, China, Kenya, Bangladesh, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Special guests on the day include Australian icon Ernie Dingo, Federal Immigration and Citizenship Minister Chris Evans, WA Premier Colin Barnett and Perth media identity Tina Altieri.
Wanneroo Mayor Jon Kelly said the Cities had managed to supersede last year’s impressive number of new citizens to make it the nation’s biggest Australia Day citizenship ceremony - for the second year.
“There is no doubt that this will be an impressive event, with a big top marquee being erected as well as a host of live entertainment and a barbecue,” he said.
Stirling Mayor David Boothman agreed, saying it would be a memorable day for those who are set to become citizens on this iconic day on our National calendar.
“I know what a proud moment it is to become an Australian citizen, having received mine in 1985 from the City of Wanneroo,” he said.
Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard said the North Metropolitan Zone Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony was a wonderful event that highlighted what can be achieved when Local Governments form positive relationships and strategic partnerships for the benefit of their local communities.
“This remarkable ceremony will bring thousands of people from different races, cultures and backgrounds together to become Australians and it will once again bring national attention to the northern corridor of Perth,” he said.
