The winner of the Individual Active Citizenship Award was Dominic Yam.
“Dominic has been recognized for his longstanding commitment to the health and wellbeing of the local seniors’ community through his involvement in a variety of mentoring roles,” Mayor Pickard said.
“He is a registered professional with Fitness Australia, runs the Fitness 50 Club, is a supporter of Heart Movers and the Heart Foundation, teaches Tai Chi and fitness classes for seniors and encourages social activities and interaction between seniors in our local community.
“Dominic was also recently a volunteer at the 2011 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth and is an example of his community spirit and willingness to give up his free time for others.
“Congratulations Dominic you are a worthy winner of the Individual Active Citizenship Award and the local seniors community has benefitted greatly from your commitment and dedication to helping others lead healthy lifestyles.”
The winner of the City of Joondalup’s Active Citizenship Award for a Community Group was won by the Joondalup Christmas Lunch organizers for their ongoing commitment and dedication to active citizenship through the outstanding initiative they’ve introduced which has become a much valued community service.
“This Joondalup Christmas Lunch provides a free lunch to any members of the community who would otherwise spend Christmas Day alone,” Mayor Pickard said.
“The Lunch is a hugely popular and successful event that reflects the importance of giving, sharing and putting the needs of others first.
“With support from various churches and volunteers, the Joondalup Christmas Lunch was the stand-out candidate to receive this award.
The winner of the City of Joondalup’s Active Citizenship Award for a person aged under 25 was 16-year-old Will Rennison for being a role model and mentor to young basketball lovers in the local community.
“Will is a dedicated sports role model who has been involved in coaching an under-11s junior girls’ basketball team,” Mayor Pickard said.
“He has participated in various coaching courses to further develop his leadership and coaching skills, which will ultimately benefit those young future sports stars he mentors.
“Will is also a referee and has been nominated to participate at the WA Basketball League State Carnival further demonstrating his status as a young role model to others in the community.
“This is a well-deserved award recognising Will’s outstanding generosity, giving spirit and dedicated work with local young people.
