Hairdressing premises: approval requirements

To operate a hairdressing establishment within the City, the proprietor must ensure that the premises meets the provisions of the Hairdressing Establishment Regulations 1972. These regulations contain operational requirements for hairdressers and the premises they operate from.

An application to register a hairdressing establishment can be made with the City. Upon receipt of an application to register, an Environmental Health Officer will assess compliance with the requirements of the regulations. This will often include an inspection of the premises.

Application requirements

  • Application form
  • Detailed plans and specifications of the proposed premises, including: scaled site plan, floor plans, internal elevations, and schedule of materials and finishes
  • Application fee, in accordance with the Environmental Health Schedule of Fees and Charges.

Development (planning) approval

Development (Planning) Approval may be required for a hairdressing premises. If the business is to operate from a home, please refer to Home Business approvals.

Building permit requirements

A Building Permit application may also be required. To confirm if a building permit is required, please place your request in writing to the City’s Building Services, outlining what is proposed.
