July School Holidays at the Libraries

There is a lot to celebrate in July! This month marks the 25th birthday of both the Joondalup Library and the book “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” In July we also celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people during NAIDOC week.

Harry Potter Treasure Hunt – for kids

All Libraries
Visit the Libraries any time during the school holidays and find all 12 Magical Objects hidden amongst the shelves in the Children’s Library to go in the draw to win a special prize.

Harry Potter Treasure Hunt – for older kids and adults

How well do you know your Harry Potter facts? There are 12 Quiz Questions located throughout the Library that will test your knowledge of the series. Answer them all correctly to go in the draw to win a special Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone pack.

Tragic Magic Show

Come and celebrate the 25th Birthday of the Joondalup Library with the hilarious Tragic Magic Show. Featuring the antics of Jelly Kelly the mischievous clown, and the great Count Glennybean, the show is filled with lots of surprises, games, giant bubbles, and plenty of audience participation. Mindful Mandalas

You are invited to calm the mind with a creative workshop focused around the power of the Mandala. Experiment with colour and shapes with Jess from the Sand Card Company to create sand and scratch art Mandalas, and design your very own masterpiece to take home.

National Simultaneous Story Time

National Simultaneous Story Time is back for its 22nd year on Wednesday 25 May.

Every year a picture book, written by an Australian author, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places across Australia.

Last year was the biggest and most successful NSS to date, with over 1.98 million participants at over 33 thousand locations.

The book chosen for 2022 is Family Tree, written by Josh Pyke, and illustrated by Ronojoy Ghosh. The book is a heartfelt celebration of family, community and the seasons of life.

City of Joondalup Libraries will be celebrating National Simultaneous Story Time all week, so come along for Story Time to listen to this wonderful story. All sessions begin at 10.00am.

A to Z of Animals

There is so much happening at the Libraries in the April school holidays! Join in the fun and discover something new as we celebrate the wonderful world of animals.

Bookings open online on Monday 28 March, 9.30am with a cost of $4.00 per child per activity. Bookings and online payment are essential. Please note, there will be no refunds issued. Parents/carers of children under 12 are required by library policy to remain in the building while their children attend the event.

The Power of Poop Show
Monday 11 April, 10.00 – 11.00am, Joondalup Library
Ages 4 -10 years
Join award-winning author Chris Collin for a lively and interactive show, featuring his latest book The Things you can do with Blue Whale poo. This environmentally – themed picture book is his funniest (and stinkiest), and believe it or not, blue whale poo is really important to the environment! In this celebration of all creatures great and very small, children will be entertained by funny sea creature puppets, singing, dancing, drawing, stinky fun facts, and giant inflatable whales!

Origami Animals

Join local origami extraordinaire Sanny Ang and learn how to make a variety of amazing animals and insects, like Flutterflies and Blowing Frogs.

Get up close and personal with some furry, feathered, and scaly animals from Ranger Red’s Zoo in Peel. In this hands-on wildlife experience, children will discover the wonderful and weird world of these animals and learn about wildlife conservation and the programs that are helping to protect our most treasured animals.

Stories in the Park

Do you like to get outdoors with your children? 

On Tuesdays throughout the month of March, in addition to regular story time sessions, City of Joondalup Libraries will be heading out to popular local parks. 

Invite your friends for a morning of stories, adventure and nature craft. There will be some fun games and activities, making the most of the outdoors.

Family Time at Woodvale Library

Get the Saturday morning wiggles out at Family Time, an action-packed program full of stories, songs, rhymes and making noise in the library!

Aimed at children from 18 months to 4 years, the songs and actions will grab the attention of younger children, while the older children will be entertained by the fun-filled stories.

Siblings, parents, grandparents, carers and all the family are invited to participate as we promote literacy and fun in the Library.

Join us at Woodvale Library every Saturday morning at 10.00am, commencing on Saturday 5 February 2022.

Summer Reading Quest

Summer Reading Quest – Epic Adventures Await

During the summer school holidays, Western Australian Public Libraries are running an exciting new Summer Reading Quest.

The Quest is open to children of all ages and runs from 18 December 2021 – 31 January 2022.

Children can participate in a number of ways:

  • Adventure Cards (for ages 6 and up)
    A range of different cards inspiring children to complete fun literacy activities
  • Reading Log (for ages 6 and up)
    A calendar-style reading log to record the number of days and time read over the holidays
  • Summer Steps Card (for ages 5 and under)
    A thirty day quest with fun literacy activities for little ones to do with family and friends.

How to participate:

  • Pick up a reading log or card from your local Library.
  • Collect rewards from the Library as you complete challenges.
  • Submit your entry by Friday 11 February 2022.
  • Every card and log submitted goes into the draw to win amazing state-wide prizes.

No matter how you read, where you read, what you read or whether you’re big or small, you can join this awesome quest.

Get creative this Summer with a range of fun and engaging STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) activities.

Bookings open online on Monday 20 December, 9.30am with a cost of $4.00 per child per activity. Bookings and online payment are essential.

Please note, there will be no refunds issued. There is a maximum of three January events per child, and parents/carers of children under 12 are required by library policy to remain in the building while their children attend the event.

Lights! Camera! Action! Use stop motion animation techniques to create your very own movie masterpiece. Participants will need to bring their own iPad or tablet with the Stop Motion Studio app preinstalled. For ages 8-12 years.

Breathing, Blood and Boogers
Tuesday 18 January 2022, 2.00pm – 3.00pm, Woodvale Library

Let’s explore our awesomely gross bodies! In this hands-on workshop about our circulatory and respiratory systems, you will listen to your lungs with stethoscopes, create a zoomed in version of our blood and discover why we produce snot! For ages 8 – 12 years.

Muggle Magic
Thursday 20 January 2022, 2.00pm – 3.00pm, Whitford Library

Attention all Muggles! Use science to hone your wizardry skills in this potions workshop inspired by J.K. Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter’ series. For ages 8 – 12 years.

Free activities throughout the school holidays – ages 5 to 12 years
Visit the Libraries anytime during the school holidays and participate in the STEAM Treasure Hunt – you could win a Dymocks book voucher! You can also create a colourful stick creature out of wool and sticks at the DIY Maker Space.

Join Native Animal Rescue and get up close to some amazing native wildlife. Share interesting facts, funny stories and learn what to do if you find injured, sick or orphaned wildlife in your backyard or local park. For ages 5 – 12 years.

Just Add Slime

Marble Run

Calling all engineers, problem-solvers and creative thinkers. Join in for some challenging fun using boxes, cardboard tubes, paper plates and other recycled materials to design and build your ultimate marble run. For ages 7 – 12 years.

Lego Build and Putt Putt
Wednesday 19 January 2022, 2.00pm – 3.30pm, Joondalup Library

Build, pitch, putt and swing your way through unique holes featuring your creation of landscapes and obstacles. Together we will build a ‘Holey Moley’ style course from Lego and test your golf skills as we transform Joondalup Library into our very own mini golf course. For ages 5-12 years.

Sea Creature Glass Mosaics

Explore the different techniques, tools and materials used in the ancient practice of mosaics, and create your own amazing sea creature mosaic to take home.

Curious Chemistry

Inspire your child to love science with this hands-on reactive workshop. Take a few ingredients to make a super cold bag, experiment with slime-making, and feel the fizz of sherbet on your tongue – combining chemicals is so much fun! For ages 5-8 years.

National Simultaneous Story Time

National Simultaneous Story Time is back for its 21st year on Wednesday 19 May. Join us as we blast off into space.

Every year a picture book, written by an Australian author is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places across Australia.

The book chosen for 2021 is Give me Some Space! written and illustrated by Philip Bunting.

This year is extra special because the book is read by the astronaut Dr Shannon Walker from the International Space Station.
