The Art of Summer

Get creative this Summer through art, music and movement activities at the City of Joondalup Libraries.. The complete program can be viewed on the City’s event calendar.

Cost is up to $4.00 per child per activity. Bookings are essential and open online from Monday 16 December 2019, 9.30am. There is a maximum of three events per child, and parents/carers of children under 12 years are required by library policy to remain in the building while their children attend the event.

Uthando Doll Making for Africa

Tuesday 7 January 2020, 9.30am – 12.00pm, Joondalup Library
You are never too young or too old to help make someone else’s life a little happier. Join us to make a special doll to give to a child in need. This is a family event. Children are encouraged to bring an adult with them to join in. Please bring a small sewing kit if you have one For ages 6 – 12.

Crocheting for Beginners

Thursday 9 January 2020, 10.00am – 11.30am, Whitford Library
Learn how to slip knot, chain stitch, and treble stitch in this crochet for beginners workshop with Lisa Black. Using these simple techniques, you’ll be able to begin making a mug cosy or bookmark. You’ll leave the workshop with the skills to finish off your project and start a range of new crochet projects at home! No experience in crochet is necessary and all materials are provided. For ages 10 – 12.

Woven Wall Hangings

Thursday 9 January 2020, 12.30pm – 2.00pm, Whitford Library
Create a beautiful piece of woven artwork to hang on your wall in this fun workshop with Lisa Black. Weaving is a relaxing craft and is also very portable – once you know how to weave, you’ll want to bring your loom everywhere! Using different techniques, colours, and materials you’ll create with a unique tactile artwork that will brighten up any space. No experience necessary and all materials are provided. For ages 8 – 12.

Circus Workshops

Friday 10 January 2020, Duncraig Library
Session One, 1.30pm – 2.30pm. For ages 4 – 7
Session Two, 3.00pm – 4.00pm. For ages 8 – 12
Kids always ask: How do you do that? In this fun hands on workshop kids will be shown exactly how to do some of the circus tricks they love.

African Drumming

Monday 13 January 2020, 2.00pm-3.00pm, Joondalup Library
Drum and dance together with Paul Osei Kofi from Ghana, as he brings alive the rhythms of Africa. Traditional African drums and other percussion instruments are provided for every child in this exciting and noisy workshop. For ages 5 – 12.

Get the Band Together

Tuesday 14 January 2020, 10.00am-11.00am, Duncraig Library
Calling all Musicians! Have fun making your own musical instruments and find your rhythm in an interactive upbeat session of music and craft. For ages 5 – 12.

Sea Shape

Wednesday 15 January 2020, 10.00am-11.30am, Whitford Library
This is a hands on workshop for young children, having fun exploring shapes and movement in nature – from oceans to planets – and making art using natural materials..For ages 4 – 7.

Find, Design and Create

Wednesday 15 January 2020, 1.00pm-2.30pm, Whitford Library
Join in an exploration of ‘found’ objects, and get creative with words, sounds and collage, using ‘rescued’ items. For ages 8 – 12.

Stop Motion Magic

Thursday 16 January 2020, 10.00am-11.30am, Woodvale Library
Make your own Lego movie! Come and learn the magic of stop motion animation and use Lego to create a theatrical masterpiece. Participants will need to bring their own iPad or tablet with the Stop Motion Studio app preinstalled. Stop Motion Studio is available free for iPads on the App Store and for Android tablets on the Play Store. For ages 8 – 12.

Marine Magic

Friday 17 January 2020, 10.00am-11.30am, Joondalup Library
Discover the magic below the surface of the ocean with local marine artist and diver Holly Ogden. Holly spent 4 years travelling and living in Asia, painting murals and surfboards, as well as diving and swimming with sharks and turtles. In this fun interactive workshop, children will learn lots of interesting facts about marine animals and how to identify them, and then create their own painting inspired by these amazing creatures. For ages 8 – 12.

Creative Mess with Watercolours

Monday 20 January 2020, 10.00am-12.00pm, Joondalup Library
Make a creative mess with local WA illustrator Gabriel Evans. In this fun and interactive two-hour workshop, children will learn new techniques in watercolour painting and create their own masterpiece to take home.For ages 8 – 12.

Musical Adventure

Come on a musical story adventure with singer Rebecca Jane Flannagan and her animal friends. Enjoy lots of singing, dancing, magical bubbles and make your own musical shaker to join in with the fun! For ages 4 – 7.

Singing for Fun

Do you like singing? Do you like being on stage? Then this workshop is for you! Singer and educator Rebecca Jane Flannagan will teach tricks and tips for musical theatre, singing on stage, and getting the most out of your voice. For ages 8 – 12.

Sandcastle Creations

Wednesday 22 January 2020, 2.00pm – 3.30pm, Whitford Library
You may have made sandcastles at the beach before – but have you ever made them at the library? Come to Whitford Library to learn how to make kinetic sand and then get creative making and sculpting some fabulous sandcastle creations. (Please bring a container to take your sand home!) For ages 8 – 12.

Batik Ink Painting

Tone, mix, shade & make colours with batik inks and create a masterpiece you will take pride in hanging on your wall or window. For ages 8 – 12.

Summer Reading Party with James Foley

Friday 31 January 2020, 2.00pm – 3.30pm, Woodvale Library
Celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Challenge with award-winning author and illustrator James Foley. Find out the inspiration behind the characters in his hilarious “S.Tinker” graphic novel series – the artwork from the second book features on the Reading Challenge booklet. Watch James demonstrate his cartoon-style drawings and be inspired to create your own characters. Come along for some inspiration, party food, and lots of laughs! But be quick as James’ sessions are very popular! For ages 5 – 12.

Create the Art of Summer

Visit the DIY Maker Space at the City of Joondalup Libraries these holidays and create something arty and colourful with paper plates. Then search for musical instruments in our Summer Treasure Hunt. No Bookings Required. Ages 4 to 12.
