Invent your Summer

Let your imagination run wild this Summer. Join the Libraries for a range of fun STEAM-based activities to encourage exploration and discovery!

Cost is $4.00 per child per activity. Bookings are essential and open online from Monday 21 December 2020, 9.30am. There is a maximum of three January events per child, and parents/carers of children under 12 are required by library policy to remain in the building while their children attend the event.

Egg Drop Challenge

Thursday 7 January 2021,10.00am – 12.30pm
Woodvale Library

How far can an egg drop without breaking? See what creative contraption you can produce on a budget to help an egg survive a perilous drop. Learn about gravity and design through this exciting and potentially messy project. For ages 10 to 12 years.

Board Game Secrets

Friday 8 January 2021, 2.00pm – 3.30pm
Duncraig Library

Ever wanted to blitz Battleship, conquer Connect Four, master Monopoly or triumph at Tic Tac Toe? Join Maths expert Dr John West to explore the mathematics behind creating and building your own board game. Maths can help you master any game that relies on the roll of a die, the flip of a card, or a sensible strategy. This workshop is a hands-on introduction to the maths of games and leisure. For ages 8 to 12 years.

Sense your World

Science Alive presents a fun and educational show about the science of our senses. Unlock the mysteries of our five senses and learn how animals survive in the wild by using theirs. Through interactive games (and a bit of magic) you will discover that hearing, seeing, touching, tasting and smelling are much more than they seem. For ages 4 to 8 years.

Paper Construction Challenge

Friday 15 January 2021, 10.00am – 11.30am
Joondalup Library

This workshop covers everything from the ancient Japanese art of paper folding to designing and testing paper helicopters and paper planes. Join Maths expert Dr John West and embark on engineering challenges like who can build the strongest bridge? Who can build the tallest tower? All with just some paper, scissors, sticky tape and glue. For ages 8 to 12 years.

Horsing Around

Do you love horses or art? Come and see how horses have been portrayed in art throughout history from pre-historic to modern times. Be inspired by the book “Dr Seuss’s Horse museum” and create your own horse masterpiece to take home for the whole family to admire. For ages 7 to 12 years.

Create a Creature

Do you like insects and bugs? Do you like making things? Come along to this fun hands-on workshop to create something that moves along the ground, using recycled materials and tools from REmida. REmida is a centre for creative reuse that collects offcuts, discards and remnants of local industry to reuse for play, creativity and construction. For ages 5 to 8 years.

Sustainable Scarecrows

Tuesday 19 January 2021, 1.00pm – 2.30pm
Duncraig Library

It’s time to get creative with recycling and gardening. Construct a scarecrow for your outside area using recycled materials and tools from REmida. Afterwards take a stroll through the Duncraig Edible Garden. REmida is a centre for creative reuse that collects offcuts, discards and remnants of local industry to reuse for play, creativity and construction. For ages 8 to 12 years.

Smells like Summer

Smell can change our mood and make us suddenly remember something long forgotten. What does summer smell like to you? Sunscreen and seaweed from all that time at the beach? Popcorn from family movie nights? Join us to create unique bubble blowers and make your very own special bubble mix that smells like your summer. For ages 5 to 8 years.

Fascinating Flora

Do you like drawing? Do you like nature? In this art workshop you will examine the shapes and textures of live plants and learn about amazing plants from around the world. Then create your own observational drawings and build a fantastic wild plant installation out of natural and recycled objects. For ages 4 to 8 years.

Gems and Minerals

Joondalup Library

Explore natural science through art making. Learn about the structure and beauty of gems and minerals, be guided through observational drawing techniques, and use your findings to sculpt giant 3D mega-gems. For ages 8 to 12 years.

In this hands-on workshop you will create musical instruments using recycled materials and tools from REmida. Experiment with beats and rhythmic patterns and explore the maths within music. REmida is a centre for creative reuse that collects offcuts, discards and remnants of local industry to reuse for play, creativity and construction. For ages 8 to 12 years.
