Be inspired to get back to nature these Spring holidays. In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle, Joondalup Libraries are presenting a series of fun activities with animals, plants and all things natural. The complete program can be viewed on the libraries’ website or the City’s event calendar.

Cost is $4.00 per child per activity. Bookings are essential and open online on Monday 16 September 2019 from 9.30am. There is a maximum of three events per child, and parents/carers of children under 12 years are required by library policy to remain in the building while their children attend the event.

What’s on offer

Magic of Nature with Eco Faeries

Wednesday 2 October 2019, 2.00pm – 3.00pm, Woodvale Library
Join Faerie Cara and discover the magic of nature through stories, songs and dancing. In this fun and interactive session, children will also learn about recycling and gardening, and create their own terrarium to take home. For ages 4 to 7 years.

Bee Hotels

Thursday 3 October 2019, 10.00am – 11.30am, Whitford Library
Have you heard the buzz? Bees are one of the most important animals on our planet! Bee Hotels help keep bees safe and cozy while they go about their important work. Create and decorate your own Bee Hotel Mug and learn more about the special role bees play in our environment. For ages 5 to 12 years.

Natural Lego Wonders

Thursday 3 October 2019, 2.00pm – 3.30pm, Joondalup Library
Join us for an afternoon of Lego building as we create a world inspired by nature – full of plants, animals, and natural wonders. For ages 5 to 12 years.

Origami animals

Friday 4 October 2019, 2.00pm – 3.30pm, Duncraig Library
Join local origami extraordinaire Sanny Ang and learn how to make a variety of amazing animals and insects, like Flutterflies and Blowing Frogs. For ages 5 to 12 years.

Spineless Wonders

Monday 7 October 2019, Session One, 10.30am – 11.30am and Session Two, 12.00pm – 1.00pm, Joondalup Library
Did you know that Invertebrates (mini-beasts) make up over 90% of the creatures living on Earth? Join David and Fleur from Spineless Wonders for a hands-on and educational session about the amazing world of mini-beasts. Children will get up close with a variety of live creatures and learn about the vital roles they play in our environment. For ages 5 to 12 years.

Crafty Critters

Tuesday 8 October 2019, 2.00pm – 3.30pm, Woodvale Library
Spend an afternoon using everyday materials to create colourful bugs and insects, and then add them to the library’s Crafty Critter Garden Display or take them home to add to your own garden paradise! For ages 5 to 12 years.

Writing for Nature – with a splash of colour!

Wednesday 9 October 2019, 10.30am – 12.00pm, Whitford Library
If you love living things and like writing, drawing, colouring and collage, we’re putting all these things together to ‘get back to nature.’ Join author and poet Anne Pettit for a creative writing and art workshop. For ages 8 to 12 years.

Thyme for Herbs

Friday 11 October 2019, 2.00pm – 3.30pm, Duncraig Library
Have fun decorating pots to plant delicious herbs in, and then take a stroll through the Duncraig Edible Garden, just outside the library’s front door. For ages 5 to 12 years.

Stick Art

Visit the DIY Maker Space at the City of Joondalup Libraries these holidays to create your own stick character, and search for The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s food in our Spring Treasure Hunt. By participating in the treasure hunt, you will go into the draw to win a Special Edition 50th Anniversary copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Free activity.
