Famed American costume designer Patricia Field has been announced as the City of Joondalup’s Urban Couture Ambassador for 2018.

Now in its seventh year, Urban Couture is a dynamic fashion program that aims to support the Western Australian fashion industry and bring emerging fashion designers, photographers, textile artists and creative business entrepreneurs to the northern corridor of Perth.

Each year the program engages with fashion and costume design students at Edith Cowan University’s Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Curtin University and both North and South Metropolitan TAFE.

Born and bred in New York City, Field has received widespread critical praise for her pioneering vision of what constitutes style and a fashion philosophy that values eclecticism, creative expression and an understanding of oneself over the chasing of trends.

Field’s distinctive approach to dressing is evident through her work as a costume designer and she single-handedly changed the way women dress through the HBO series Sex and the City and its feature films.

For her work on Sex and the City, Field won an Emmy Award and received five nominations for Best Costume Design, and with the help of a thrift store tutu she created one of the most iconic onscreen New York fashion moments since Audrey Hepburn donned Givenchy for a stroll past Tiffany’s.

Field also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Achievement in Costume Design for The Devil Wears Prada, as well as continued recognition for her work on television series such as Ugly Betty, Hope & Faith, and most recently for Darren Star’s hit TV Land series Younger, starring Sutton Foster and Debi Mazar.

Field is also a seasoned retailer, establishing her eponymous boutique in New York City in 1966, which remained a fashion landmark for 50 years.

Field said she is honoured to be the Urban Couture Ambassador for 2018 and looking forward to coming to Joondalup.

“Urban Couture is such an innovative program and provides excellent support for emerging graduate designers,” she said.

“I am really excited to be coming to the City of Joondalup to see the raw talent in Western Australia.”

Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob said the City was delighted to have secured Patricia Field as its 2018 Urban Couture Ambassador.

“Patricia is an international powerhouse of the fashion industry, and having her on board as this year’s Urban Couture Ambassador aligns with Joondalup’s vision of being a globally-recognised bold, creative and prosperous city,” he said.

“Urban Couture enters its seventh year in 2018, and Patricia joins a long and distinguished list of featured program ambassadors including Renae Ayris, Samantha Harris, Jaime Lee Major, Romance Was Born and Karen Walker.

“In 2017, Urban Couture supported over 26 designers and eight fashion photographers in a program of 12 events, attracting over 15,000 visitors throughout February and March.

“We look forward to another successful program in 2018 which further underlines the fashion destination that Joondalup has become.”

The Urban Couture program runs from 25 February to 26 March 2018 and features fashion shows, exhibitions, workshops and artist talk nights.
