Coastal Open Top Bus back for summer
After a successful trial last summer, the Sunset Coast Explorer open top bus will return to the Cities of Joondalup and Stirling as the newly branded Perth Coastal Explorer from Saturday 24 September 2022.
The Perth Coastal Explorer will expand its coverage area this year with pick up and drop off locations in the Perth CBD as well as Scarborough and Hillarys Boat Harbour, which will cater for more domestic and international visitors and allow more tourists to explore the City of Joondalup coastline.
The City of Joondalup, in partnership with the City of Stirling and State Government agencies, provided funding for the inaugural service in 2021/22. This joint funding allowed the service to be offered to locals and regional visitors for free to encourage them to explore the sunset coast.
The trial route was launched in October 2021 and transported weekend visitors between Scarborough, North Beach and Hillarys and proved to be popular with the bus reaching 70-90 per cent capacity during its weekend runs.
The success of the trial led to the service now being provided as a user paid tourist attraction run by Perth Explorer. Tickets and packages are available at Perth Explorer.
The success of the Sunset Coast Explorer demonstrates that through collaboration and innovation, local governments can support local businesses, improve the visitor experience and achieve strategic goals for the benefit of the community.
