Community input needed for Edgewater Quarry
City of Joondalup ratepayers, residents and stakeholders who would like to have their say on the future use of the Edgewater Quarry site can nominate for membership of the Edgewater Quarry Community Reference Group (EQCRG).
The aim of the EQCRG will be to assist with the development of a concept plan for the
17hectare site which is strategically located at one of the City’s main arterial roads and a key entry point to the Joondalup City Centre.
The EQCRG will also identify and discuss the issues and concerns of community members and stakeholders around the possible usage options for Edgewater Quarry. It is expected the group will seek feedback from the wider community on relevant issues and liaise and collaborate with extended networks and community groups.
An Expression of Interest period for prospective members will run from 22 February to 23 March and up to 20 people will be eligible for membership.
Edgewater Quarry is bounded by residential housing, Joondalup Drive, Treetop Avenue and Regatta Drive and comprises three reserves and one City freehold lot. Its topography includes cliffs and adjacent to a local residential area, there are strips of land up to 30 metres wide.
Mayor Albert Jacob has been appointed the EQCRG’s presiding member. The group will also include both North Central Ward Councillors, Nige Jones and Philippa Taylor.
Mayor Jacob said the Edgewater Quarry site had been earmarked for intensive development as far back as the 1970s and he hoped the EQCRG would emulate the success of the Ocean Reef Marina Community Reference Group.
“Given the potential for any future development to be of significant local and regional importance, the City is looking for a diverse membership base inclusive of community and special interest group representatives from outside the City,” he said.
Ideas touted for the site in the past have included botanic gardens, picnic areas, walking trails and an adventure playground
Meetings will be held be every two months and the term of the group shall run until 31 October 2019.
