Craigie Leisure Centre Construction Commences
Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob joined key local stakeholders in turning the first sod of soil to officially begin construction of Stage 1 of the $8.7m Craigie Leisure Centre refurbishment project.
Stage One includes relocation and extension of the group fitness studio, cycle studio and creche, as well as formalisation of the existing overflow car park area to the western end of the centre and additional parking on the northern side. Works are expected to be completed in early-2022.
Stage Two, scheduled to commence in February 2022 and be completed by early-2023, includes extension of the gym, new and expanded change rooms and toilet area, relocation and extension of the wellness studio, and upgrades to the main entry access road, car park and pedestrian crossing.
The project was professionally designed by architects Hodge Collard Preston, with BE Constructions awarded the contract to undertake construction work.
Craigie Leisure Centre remains open during the construction period, with temporary changes to health and fitness facilities designed to minimise the impact to members and customers as much as possible.
Mayor Jacob was joined today by Caitlin Collins MLA, Member for Hillarys, with the State Government committing $2.9 million towards the refurbishment project.
Deputy Mayor Cr Russ Fishwick, Central Ward Councillor Christopher May and Troy King from BE Project (WA) were also present for the sod-turning ceremony.
Mayor Jacob said the Craigie Leisure Centre refurbishment was a much-anticipated project in the community and it was exciting to see works getting underway.
“Craigie is one of the most popular leisure facilities in Western Australia, and with patronage growing year on year this was a very important project for the City,” he said.
“As a Council we are committed to fostering health and fitness opportunities for our residents and the wider community, and this refurbishment will ensure facilities at Craigie continue to keep pace with current and future industry trends.
“The improved gym and group fitness facilities will not only meet their needs, but also attract new members in the future.
“Membership growth is vital to enable the project to pay for itself over a period of time, so it is very important that we offer our patrons world-class facilities. I look forward to seeing the result when works are completed.”
Member for Hillarys, Caitlin Collins MLA, said she was really looking forward to taking a class in the expanded group fitness studio.
“Craigie Leisure Centre is an incredibly popular venue for community fitness. The McGowan State Government is delighted to commit $2.9 million towards this worthy health and wellbeing resource,” she said.
