Fenced dog exercise area for all pooches big and small
The City of Joondalup’s first fenced dog exercise area is now open.
Located at Elcar Park, Joondalup, the two separate exercise areas – one for large to medium-sized dogs and one for small sized dogs – both feature their own dog sandpit, dog drinking fountain and double-gate access.
Popular throughout the Perth metropolitan area, fenced dog exercise areas offer a more controlled and safer environment for dogs to play and interact.
Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob said given the park’s central location and easy accessibility, Elcar Park was sure to become a popular destination for dog owners and their animals, particularly for those residents living in, or close to, the City Centre.
“Our City is home to one of the largest dog populations per local government area in Australia and many dog owners in our City have been calling on this type of infrastructure for a number of years,” he said.
“As well as the obvious benefits for dogs, exercise areas of this nature also encourage improved social contact and interaction between owners.
“It’s pleasing that the final design of the exercise area caters for dogs of all shapes and sizes and it will only enhance Joondalup’s reputation as one of the most dog-friendly local government areas in Perth.”
Universal footpaths, limestone seating walls and turf, trees and mulched areas have been incorporated into the final design of the exercise area.
The remainder of Elcar Park outside of the dog exercise area is designated ‘dogs on leash.’
The City is also home to one of the best dog beaches in the metropolitan area at Hillarys and most City parks offer dog waste disposal facilities.
