He came, he saw and he conquered last year’s Joondalup Festival.  One year on, the five-metre, hand-woven interactive puppet known as Leor is making his presence felt on the national and international stage.

Leor has been selected to appear at next month’s Australian Performing Arts Market (APAM) in Brisbane.

The brainchild of designer Leon Hendroff and the Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, Leor will be pitched to international and national presenters for overseas touring opportunities

Commissioned by the City in 2017 for the Joondalup Festival, the 5m-puppet, incorporating one-kilometre of rope and 600 LED lights, came to life last year to provide thousands of festival-goers of all ages with a shared, multi-sensory experience.

Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob said the fact that something created specifically for last year’s festival could potentially soon be seen on the global stage, underlined the depth of world-class creative talent that exists within the City.

“Having made its world premiere in our City last year, Leor could very well be Joondalup’s gift to the world,” he said.

“APAM is an opportunity for us to showcase our City to a global audience as an innovative local government that supports the arts by offering shared cultural experiences that celebrate and enrich community connection and collaboration.”

While Leor has moved on in 2018, Hendroff is back for this year’s festival.

He will play an important role in presenting the 2018 Twilight Lantern Parade, which this year will be curated to tell The Water Story – a tale about Lake Joondalup and sustainability.

For the first time, a soundtrack and professional performers will join schools and community groups with their lanterns and puppets.

Members of the community who would like to help Hendroff make a lantern for this year’s parade can take part in a community workshop at Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City on Tuesday 30 January, 10.00am-2.00pm.

The 2018 Twilight Lantern Parade will be held will on Saturday 24 March from 6.30pm and is proudly presented by Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City
