Didn’t think the Joondalup Festival could get even bigger? Think again.

A state finalist at the 2019 Australian Event Awards in the Best Cultural Arts Event category, the northern corridor’s biggest cultural event is expanding in 2020 to include a second licensed space on Boas Avenue and even more food trucks.

From Friday 3 April – Sunday 5 April 2020 the Joondalup City Centre will come alive with a range of exciting and colourful installations and performances.

The entire festival site will be activated on the opening night including sideshow alley.

The theme for 2020 is ‘Make the City Your Playground’ and festivalgoers are encouraged to explore the expanded festival site, which will include a hidden cinema on Davidson Terrace, mermaid tank at the Joondalup Library Children’s venue and secret light installations in the trees at Central Park.

More than 50 acts will include high-octane performances in the park, pop-up circus and comedy tents, an illuminated playground and more.

There really is something for everyone.

Be sure to catch Highly Sprung by Legs on the Wall – a prolific physical theatre company based in Sydney, don’t miss Spheres and Swoon by Strange Fruit – direct from Eurovision to Joondalup – and check out the many international street performers on offer. This year, one performer will be coming from as far away as Patagonia in Argentina.

Unique to the festival from the outset has always been its focus on large-scale community projects that showcase the talent of this vibrant community.

The Twilight Lantern Parade returns for another year; a magical event involving more than 1,600 local community members parading their magnificent illuminated lanterns through the streets of Joondalup.

The 2020 Community Choral Project, under the musical direction of Matt Ward, will this year feature the music of Elton John performed by 150 local singers. The inaugural Ukulele Project will enable festivalgoers to pick up a musical instrument and play en masse.

Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob said the 22nd Joondalup Festival provided an opportunity for tens of thousands of people from across Perth to again access to a range of free world-class cultural and artistic events.

“The region’s biggest cultural event never fails to deliver,” he said.

“More than two decades into its journey, it continues to amaze me how this FREE family-friendly cultural event evolves and grows each year.

“If you haven’t been to the festival in a few years it might be time to pay a visit and see just why it has become such an iconic cultural event and an institution for families across the northern corridor and beyond.”

The 2020 Joondalup Festival is presented by Premier Partner Commonwealth Bank, Media Partners Joondalup Times, Seven West Media and Nova 937 and Print Partner Optima Press.
