Keeping of bees
The City’s Animals Local Law 1999 require any person wishing to keep bees, to first obtain written approval from the City. Bees can pose a significant risk to people who are allergic and the assessment of an application includes consultation with immediate neighbours.
Application requirements
- The applicant must be a permanent resident at the premises
- An online application must be submitted
- Provide a site plan indicating the proposed location of the beehives, sources of water and barriers that affect flight paths – a maximum of two beehives may be approved
- Hive specifications
- Payment of the application fee, in accordance with the Environmental Health Schedule of Fees and Charges.
Lodging an application
In addition, if approval is granted to keep a beehive, the owner will be required to register as a beekeeper with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
