NAIDOC Week celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, cultures and communities and their contribution to modern Australia.
The Joondalup region is part of Mooro country and is an important place for Indigenous people. Every year the City celebrates NAIDOC week with a month long celebration of Indigenous culture in July. In light of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) the National NAIDOC Committee decided to postpone the July NAIDOC Week to 8 – 15 November 2020.
The City will celebrate NAIDOC Week throughout the month of November with numerous activities including live theatre with Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company, walking tours of significant local Aboriginal sites, pop-up exhibitions at the Joondalup Library and online Noongar Language and culture lessons.
The City also worked with local Indigenous Curator Esther McDowell to produce a limited edition City of Joondalup Indigenous Artwork Collection publication. The publication includes all of the City’s 23 Artworks by Indigenous Artists, as well as a Curator’s Foreword by Ms McDowell. View the publication online below of visit a City of Joondalup library for a hard copy while they last.
