Let’s Sort Waste

It’s the right thing to do to reduce waste going to landfill

The three bin system is set to be rolled out across the City of Joondalup from late January.

Changing from a two bin system to a three bin system provides an opportunity to generate both cost savings for the City and its ratepayers and aims to improve recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste that is being sent to landfill.

After the rollout you will have:

  • One 140L red lid bin for general waste (collected weekly)
  • One 240L or 360L yellow lid bin for recycling (collected fortnightly)
  • One 240L lime green lid bin for green waste (collected fortnightly)

Residents can now request a free upgrade to a larger 360L yellow lid bin for recycling, using the online form or by calling 9400 4255.

The City encourages residents to become more sustainable and find ways to reduce the amount of waste they place in the waste bin.

From December 2018, residents can opt out of the 140L red lid bin for general waste and request a 240L red lid bin for an initial cost of $85.00. However, this fee will be reviewed and may change annually as part of the budget process.

Behavioural change and improving how we all manage waste is a key to the success of the three bin system which aims to deliver increased diversion rates from landfill and save ratepayer dollars in the process.

The three bin system is being part funded by the State Government and this method of waste management is viewed as best practice by the Waste Authority of WA in achieving increased recycling rates and increased diversion from landfill.

The City will undertake a comprehensive education campaign in the coming months to ensure that all households are aware of and understand the new three bin system before it is implemented in late January.
