Story Time session’s special guest reader unveiled

Not content with reading council agendas, complicated planning material and countless reports, Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob is undertaking some extra reading duties later this month.

Mayor Jacob is the guest reader in the City’s 2018 National Simultaneous Story Time session on Wednesday 23 May at Joondalup Library.

National Simultaneous Story Time is a highlight event of Library and Information Week (Monday 21 May – Sunday 27 May) where a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

At exactly 10.00am, Mayor Jacob will start reading Hickory Dickory Dash by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood.

A father of two young boys, Mayor Jacob knows only too well how important it is for children to develop an interest in books and stories at a young age.

“As well as boosting the creativity, imagination and literacy skills of children, regular reading sessions can be a great bonding experience for adult and child alike,” he said.

“Getting young people interested in books at an early age, when their brain is developing at a fast pace, helps establish a reading and learning culture they will have with them for life.”

This year’s simultaneous story time session aims to reach one million participants for the first time.

Library and Information Week – with the 2018 theme of Find Yourself in a Library – is a national celebration held to showcase the wide range of resources, facilities, events and services that can be found in local libraries.

All Joondalup Libraries will celebrate Library and Information Week by incorporating the National Simultaneous Story Time chosen book into their Story Time sessions on Monday, 21 May – Duncraig Library, Thursday, 24 May – Duncraig and Joondalup, Friday, 25 May – Whitford and Woodvale and Saturday, 26 May – Whitford. All sessions commence at 10.00am.
