Sorrento Beach

Sorrento Beach offers excellent family swimming and turquoise water laps against pure white sand, making it an idyllic spot for a relaxing afternoon of beach fun.

Sorrento Beach is located directly south of the bustling Hillarys Boat Harbour, which is home to plenty of restaurants and cafes, as well as the Aquarium of Western Australia.

The Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club provides peace of mind with lifeguard patrols on weekends and public holidays, while midweek lifeguard patrols are provided by the City in conjunction with Surf Life Saving WA.

Removal of Beach Enclosure

The City of Joondalup in conjunction with the State Government installed a beach enclosure at Sorrento Beach in late 2016, however at its November 2020 meeting, Joondalup Council unanimously resolved to remove the Sorrento Beach enclosure due to the compromised integrity of the structure. Removal of the beach enclosure has been completed.

The City will investigate options for the provision of a replacement enclosure. This will enable the City to adequately investigate and plan appropriately to implement a new enclosure, aided by the lessons learnt from the Sorrento Beach enclosure.

Ninja Warrior Course at Whitfords Nodes

Visitors to Whitfords Nodes Park in Hillarys can unleash their inner warrior at the City of Joondalup park Ninja Warrior Obstacle Course located at the popular health and wellbeing hub located near the 145-step stairway structure and fitness equipment.

The Warrior Course is the first mega course in Australia and has been designed in a similar fashion to the obstacles on the popular Australian Ninja Warrior TV show. The challenge is to complete each obstacle landing only on the green mounds following the circuit route from start to finish.

It is appropriate for users aged 12 and over and is a fun way to develop strength and agility.

Please be aware that this facility is not available for booking or exclusive use by individuals as it is a public facility (similar to the City’s playspaces and other fitness installations).

Important: if you have a medical condition, are overweight, aged over 40 or haven’t exercised in a long time, before starting a new exercise program, you should have a medical check-up. Please note that the City is not liable for any injury or loss sustained as a result of using the equipment.

Hillarys Beach Park (Whitfords Nodes Health and Wellbeing Hub)

Transformation into the health and wellbeing hub

Whitfords Nodes Health and Wellbeing Hub at Hillarys Beach Park now includes a large shaded public playground for the enjoyment of children aged between two and 12 years old. The playground includes swings, combination and climbing units, nature play elements, sand play and all-abilities play. The park also has many undercover picnic settings, benches and barbecues, new tree planting, an improved irrigation system, drink fountains and universal access footpaths.

Visitors to the park can also enjoy the iconic exercise stairway that extends to a height of 22m up the dune landscape and has 145 steps to climb with rest stops along the way. The top offers panoramic views of the coastline and the harbour. The exercise stairway is linked to multiple running tracks of varying lengths and difficulty through the park and the dunes. At the base of the stairway is a dedicated outdoor fitness equipment area suited to body weight exercises and calisthenics.

The health and wellbeing hub is also home to Australia’s largest outdoor park warrior course featuring 16 innovative and challenging obstacles over a 78m soft fall surface. Participants can register and record their times via an app, available by scanning a QR code located at the starting line of the course, allowing them to challenge themselves or others.

Burning garden refuse and rubbish

Burning garden refuse and/or rubbish

Burning of garden refuse and/or rubbish is not permitted at any time, in an incinerator, on the ground, or by using any other apparatus, device or homemade construction, by any person on any land within the district of Joondalup.

Under the Bush Fires Act 1954 section 24G it is an offence to burn garden refuse or rubbish contrary to a local government prohibition and can result in a fine of $250.00.

What Constitutes Rubbish?

Common types of rubbish include:

  • Liquid or solid household waste
  • Medical / clinical waste
  • Electrical waste (E-waste)
  • Hazardous waste
  • Recyclable waste
  • Construction and demolition debris
  • Green / garden waste.

Barbecues and outdoor heaters

Outdoor Cooking and Heating Apparatus

The City permits the use of solid fuel barbecues, pizza ovens, chimeneas, fire pits and outdoor wood heaters on private property for the purpose of cooking and heating only, under the following conditions:

  • No Total Fire Ban has been declared by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES)
  • A 3 metre clearance in radius has been established around the apparatus, clear of flammable material
  • Apparatus is not left unattended when in use
  • Only appropriate solid fuel is used, such as dry firewood, heat beads and coal
  • No burning of garden refuse or rubbish
  • Recommend smoke is controlled so as not to be a nuisance to your neighbours.

Fire Pits

Fire pits should be placed a safe distance away from your house and neighbouring yards. In addition, they should be located in an area where no overhanging branches, fences or other structures that could easily catch fire. Fire pits must never be left unattended and should only be used for the purposes of cooking and heating.

City Parks and Reserves

The use of outdoor cooking and heating apparatus, other than City installed and managed gas and electric barbecues, are not permitted within City parks and reserves.

Total Fire Ban (TFB)

Under the Bush Fires Act 1954 it is an offence to light a fire in the open air during a declared Total Fire Ban (TFB) and can result in a fine ranging from $250.00 to $25,000, or imprisonment for up to 12 months.

Burns Beach

A family favourite, Burns Beach is a sheltered swimming spot that sits within the wildlife-rich waters of Marmion Marine Park. Walk the coastal path, relax on the white-sand beach, barbecue in the grassed parks, or just sit atop the limestone cliffs and drink in a spectacular Indian Ocean sunset.

Look out for seabirds, dolphins, sea lions, rays and a huge diversity of other species from the lookout points. Interpretive signs along the way provide insights into the native flora, fauna and history of the area.

Dine ocean-side at the café, or try chasing some fish by throwing in a line from the groyne or northern end of the beach.

Iluka Beach Park

The City boasts 17km of stunning coastline, stretching north from Beach Road in Marmion, through to Burns Beach Road in Burns Beach. The beaches within the City have many facilities, which makes visiting them a pleasurable experience for residents and tourists of all ages.

Sorrento Beach

Please Note: Due to the current condition of the beach enclosure and recent storm events the City is unable to guarantee that the enclosure will restrict the entry of marine life, possibly including sharks, into the swimming area. The City advises that, as with all other beaches, you swim at your own risk.

Removal of the existing structure is likely to commence on Monday 23 November 2020. Some sections of the beach will not be available for use by the public during this time.

Mullaloo Beach is a popular swimming beach, ideal for children of all ages, Take a dip in the refreshing waters of the Indian Ocean or laze on the soft white sand. Enjoy a stroll, run or a bike ride on the beach paths that connect Mullaloo to neighbouring beaches along the coast.

Children will enjoy playing in the superb playground facilities and parklands overlooking the beach. Bring along a picnic lunch and settle down under the shady trees for the afternoon or indulge in a feast of fish and chips whilst admiring the stunning Western Australian sunset.

Kanangra Reserve BMX Track

BMX tracks are a great place to burn off some energy and practice BMX bike riding skills. The City recommends personal safety equipment when taking to the BMX track.
