Tangaroa Blue WA Beach Clean-Up

The Tangaroa Blue Foundation is an Australian registered charity focused on the health of the marine environment, and coordinates the Australian Marine Debris Initiative, an on-ground network of volunteers, communities, organisations and agencies around the country monitoring the impacts of marine debris along their stretch of coastline.

Friday 14 – Monday 17 October is the WA Beach Clean-Up weekend. People can get involved by hosting a clean-up, or by joining an organised clean-up. Last year, over 90 organisations (1,439 volunteers) joined in the WA Beach Clean-up, and collected over 3 tonnes of debris.

City of Joondalup in partnership with Keep Australia Beautiful Beach Clean-Up:

  • Date: Sunday 16 October
  • Location: Sorrento Beach between 8.30am – 10.30am (table at the bottom of the stairs at the carpark, north of Sorrento Surf Club).
  • Register your attendance here.

Look out for seabirds, dolphins, sea lions, rays and a huge diversity of other species from the beach or lookout.

Coastal walks and cycling trails

The City of Joondalup is privileged to have fantastic beaches, sunsets over the Indian ocean and many cycle paths that venture inland amongst nature reserves and for most of the 17 kilometres of pristine coastline.

Walk or cycle along the Sunset Coast

The Sunset Coast coastal path is an easy, half day family ride that runs from Marmion, south of Hillarys Boat Harbour to Burns Beach. Eleven interpretive signs along the path provide information on the native flora, fauna and history of the area.

The 14km trail encompasses Marmion Marine Park, a diving and snorkelling paradise, and Hillarys Boat Harbour with its cafes, shops, family friendly swimming beach and boats. Take the trail north to Burns Beach and weave through a natural coastline of bushland, alternating with fabulous coastal views.

Fishing areas, swimming beaches, lookouts, toilets, pubs, cafes, restaurants, kiosks and shops, can all be seen along this trail or alternatively via a nice drive all the way up the coast. Along the path flowering native plants, and animals such as the slow moving “bobtail” lizards and the tiny blue fairy wrens can often be spotted.

Whilst the trail can be started at either end, and accessed from any point, the official start is in the suburb of Marmion. Trail markers along the route provide distances to the next section. Please note that at many times of the year the prevailing wind makes riding north easier than riding south.

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing is an emerging and exciting sport that has become increasingly popular on the City’s beaches. Local, interstate and international visitors kitesurf at several popular beach locations within the City, particularly North Mullaloo and Pinnaroo Point, due to their great kiting conditions.

Kitesurfing achieves its greatest thrill in windy conditions and can therefore pose a risk to other beach users if not undertaken safely. As such, the City has established a designated kitesurfing area and exclusion zones to ensure the safety of all beach users. Signage along the City’s beaches indicate where kitesurfing can and can’t occur.

The basic rules are:

  • No kitesurfing in front of the exclusion zones within Mullaloo and Sorrento to a distance of 200m into the water
  • Rigging, launching and landing activities at Mullaloo must be undertaken within the designated kitesurfing area located between the exclusion zones
  • Look for the yellow bouys in the water for the western boundary of the exclusion zones and the yellow discs on the beach for the northern and southern boundaries.

For further information on kitesurfing safety, membership and insurance visit the WA Kitesurfing Association website.

To report a kitesurfing incident, please contact the City.

  • Burns Beach.

Two further areas with excellent snorkelling opportunities are “Little Island” and “North Lump,” but both of these locations are only accessible by boat.

Hillarys Dog Beach

Dog Beach Map

The Hillarys Dog Beach located in Hillarys is a stretch of coastline, dedicated all year round to the exercising of dogs.

Dogs may be exercised within the dog beach area off-lead but must remain under effective control and supervision.

Dogs may also be exercised within the Hillarys Horse Beach area immediately to the north of the dog beach under the following restrictions:

  • AM, Monday to Saturday – dogs must be on a lead at all times.
  • PM, Monday to Saturday – dogs can be exercised off-lead.
  • Sunday – dogs can be exercised off-lead all day.

Dogs may not enter the beach via the Whitford Nodes South Car Park beach access path or the northern Hillarys Marina groyne. However, they may be walked on leash along the dual-use pathway to the designated dog beach area.

Jet skiing

Jet skiing in excess of eight knots is prohibited within 200m of the shoreline along the entire City coastline.

All jet skis not used to tow passengers for the purposes of water skiing, are required to launch from designated boat launching facilities. Within the City of Joondalup, this applies to Hillarys Boat Harbour and Ocean Reef Boat Harbour. Jet skis involved in water skiing activities, may utilise the permitted water ski take off area at Pinnaroo Point (Whitfords Beach).

Swimming

A number of swimming beaches are located within the City of Joondalup, with the most popular beaches patrolled regularly by lifeguards, from October to March.

The City’s most popular swimming beaches include:

  • Mullaloo – one of Western Australia’s most visited beaches located next to the Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club and the very popular Tom Simpson Park.
  • Sorrento – Sorrento Beach is great for families and swimmers. Located directly south of Hillarys Boat Harbour, it also has popular cafes and BBQ park areas that surround this highly visited beach.  Please Note: Due to the current condition of the beach enclosure and recent storm events the City is unable to guarantee that the enclosure will restrict the entry of marine life, possibly including sharks, into the swimming area. The City advises that, as with all other beaches, you swim at your own risk. At its November 2020 meeting, Joondalup Council unanimously resolved to remove the Sorrento Beach enclosure due to the compromised integrity of the structure. Removal of the existing structure is likely to commence on Monday 23 November 2020. Some sections of the beach will not be available for use by the public during this time. The City will investigate options for the provision of a replacement enclosure. This will enable the City to adequately investigate and plan appropriately to implement a new enclosure, aided by the lessons learnt from the Sorrento Beach enclosure.
  • Hillarys Boat Harbour – based inside the protected waters of the harbour, this beach provides a safe swimming area for families with young children.
  • Hillarys – is another popular, safe and accessible beach located north of the Hillarys Boat Harbour, with ample parking and picnic facilities.

Local Surf Clubs within the City of Joondalup include:

  • Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club
  • Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club.

The City also manages Craigie Leisure Centre which is a great place for lap swimming and recreational swimming, with energy efficient water temperature control.
