City of Joondalup libraries have a variety of resources to help job seekers of all ages.

Book collection

The Libraries’ Business, Finance and Careers section has a selection of quality resources to assist in the development of resumes, tips about applying for jobs and other useful resources for all job seekers. You can search for items through the library catalogue.

Online resources

The City libraries offer a range of online training courses that can assist you to improve your work-related skills. There are hundreds of available courses including tutorials on using software such as Word and Excel, as well as skills such as office administration, book-keeping and working in a team. If you need a CV/resume you can access several sites that will assist you with writing it.

Computers and other facilities

Computers, scanning and printing facilities are available at all Library branches.

Employment recruitment and selection process

The City of Joondalup employs people in a range of different occupations to meet the needs of our community. Vacant positions are advertised on the City’s current jobs vacancy service which links through to our career portal. Job seekers are encouraged to sign up to receive regular updates on job vacancies through the City’s career portal, and follow the City’s LinkedIn page.

City employees must have legal rights to work in Australia. This includes:

  • Australian and/or New Zealand citizens
  • permanent residents
  • temporary residents with permission to work
  • international students with permission to work
  • people holding various visas from the Department of Immigration Australia with permission to work.

If you are selected for an interview, you will need to show original documents of your legal right to work in Australia. Any of the following documents can be brought to the interview:

  • Australian birth certificate.
  • Australian citizenship certificate.
  • Australian or New Zealand passport.
  • Passport from another country if you hold an Australian visa.
  • Certificate of evidence of resident status.

Advertised positions provide a summary of the position and a copy of the position description, which you are encouraged to read.

The position description will include details of ‘essential’ qualifications or clearances required for the position. In certain circumstances, the City will allow a maximum of up to three months for you to obtain the qualifications/clearances at your own cost, as a condition in an offer of employment.

Preparing your application

Please ensure your application includes the following:

Covering letter

All applications are assessed against the required skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications as listed in the Position Description. Therefore, a covering letter is required to briefly address these points.

Selection criteria

If the advertisement asks you to address specific selection criteria, this must be provided as part of your covering letter. The selection criteria specifies the minimum skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications that are required for the position. Consideration for interview is based upon clear demonstration of your ability to meet each of the selection criteria.

The following is a recommended guide on how to address selection criteria:

  • List each selection criteria under a separate heading.
  • Ensure your response to each criteria is no longer than half a page.
  • Use key words listed in the criteria.
  • Outline examples of work, events or projects that demonstrate your experience. The STAR principle can be used (eg Situation, Task, Action, Response).

Resume

This should contain:

  • personal details including name, address, telephone number and email address
  • summary of skills
  • relevant work history
  • education, training courses attended and qualifications
  • licences and professional memberships.

Please include the names and contact numbers of at least two work referees, preferably your current supervisor or manager; alternatively a supervisor/manager from a previous position may be used.

Selection process

Fairness and equity

The City of Joondalup seeks to build a diverse workplace and is committed to ensuring that the recruitment and selection process is fair and equitable.

Selection for interviews

A panel will shortlist applicants who demonstrate they meet the requirements of the position. This may take up to 21 days after the closing date. If you are not contacted within the 21 days, it means you have been unsuccessful on this occasion.

If you are selected for an interview, the City will contact you to organise a mutually convenient time to be interviewed.

Interviews

Interviews are conducted by the same shortlisting panel and each applicant will be assessed in the same manner. Questions are based on the selection criteria for the position. In most cases, questions will be given to each candidate before the interview.

Behavioural based questions will be asked to obtain examples of past work situations including how the situation was handled and the outcome of the action taken.

During the interview, panel members will take notes and assess your answers to questions.

Additional assessments

If required, applicants may be asked to undertake other selection tests relevant to the position, including practical, aptitude and psychological testing. Preferred applicants are required to complete a medical questionnaire. Some positions also require a pre-employment medical at a centre nominated by the City to determine the applicant’s suitability to carry out the inherent requirements of the Position Description.

Interview outcomes

Applicants will be contacted within a few weeks after all interviews are conducted. The successful applicant will receive a verbal offer from the panel Chairperson.

Unsuccessful applicants will be notified via email or receive a call from the panel Chairperson. If requested, the panel Chairperson will provide feedback to unsuccessful applicants who attended an interview.
