Embrace Social September at Joondalup Libraries

To promote the mental health benefits of being socially connected, this September, Joondalup Libraries is supporting Act Belong Commit’s Social September initiative to encourage our members to increase social connections through activity.

Relationships and social connections provide us with a sense of belonging, which is essential for our mental health and wellbeing.

Belonging to groups, whether formal or informal, large or small, local or even international, contributes to our identity and who we are.

Belonging helps define our sense of identity and satisfies our psychological need for friendship.

Follow Joondalup Libraries on Facebook or Instagram for ways to become involved with Social September.

Act Belong Commit

The City of Joondalup has partnered with Mentally Healthy WA to help promote the Act-Belong-Commit message. Act Belong Commit is a comprehensive health promotion campaign that encourages individuals to take action to protect and promote their own mental wellbeing and encourages organisations that provide mentally healthy activities to promote participation in those activities.

Why Act Belong Commit?

Prevention and early intervention, including engaging in activities that keep us mentally healthy, are the most effective ways to improve individual and
community mental wellbeing. The good news is there are things we can all do to promote our mental wellbeing and create a stronger, more resilient
community. Being active, having a sense of belonging and having a purpose in life all contribute to happiness, good mental health and stronger
communities.

How to Act Belong Commit?

The core message of the campaign focusses on:

  • Act: Do something. Keep active – mentally, physically, socially, spiritually, and culturally.
  • Belong: Do something with someone. Keep connected – to friends, family, community and your culture. Join a book club, join a sports team, take a cooking class, go to community events.
  • Commit: Do something meaningful. Do something meaningful, important and valuable to you. Volunteer, learn something new, take on a challenge, take up a cause, help a neighbour.
