Explore: Parks and Playgrounds

The sun is shining, the kids are laughing, and the promise of your lunch is making itself known as the aroma of BBQ fills the air. This is summer in Perth, where unforgettable family memories are made. Swap screen time for green time and explore one of the more than 300 parks and reserves right here in your neighbourhood. Here are the top five picks for summer 2020/21.

1. Tom Simpson Park, Mullaloo

Spectacular sunsets over the Indian Ocean provide a stunning backdrop for this beachside family paradise. Located right on Mullaloo Beach, kick back on the grass and enjoy your picnic with friends and family in the sunshine. Kids are spoiled for choice with two playgrounds catering to every age and stage – one for younger children learning to climb and explore and the other for the more advanced playground adventurers.

Enjoy the BBQs and make the most of the private and shared shelters with tables and benches. For an even more relaxing day out, just bring your picnic blanket and grab your lunch and a coffee hit from the nearby cafes and coffee shops.

2. Shepherds Bush Park and Reserve, Kingsley

If your kids are adrenalin seekers in the making, test their bike and BMX skills at the City’s first Pump and Jump Track. Featuring a variety of hill sizes and three colour coded courses, the park provides challenges suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced riders.

There’s also a transport-themed bike and scooter track for younger children, as well as a playground with a rope climbing frame, swing set, slide and wood balancing logs. Make a day of it and enjoy the BBQ and picnic amenities.

3. Neil Hawkins Park, Joondalup

An urban paradise can be found in Neil Hawkins Park in Yellagonga Regional Park, one of the most peaceful and picturesque areas in the Joondalup City Centre. Walk or cycle the 16km trail around Lake Joondalup and pause on the jetty for your chance to photograph swans, long-necked turtles and pelicans.

A locomotive-inspired playground will delight kids of all ages, with BBQ and picnic facilities making this a fantastic spot to enjoy a whole day out.

4. Elcar Park, Joondalup

If your kids have four legs and a tail, the City’s first fenced dog exercise area might be more your style. Located at Elcar Park in Joondalup, the park provides dedicated areas for small and medium-large dogs to safely frolic and socialise and live their best dog-life. Let your pooch dig freely in the dog sandpits, while dog drinking fountains and double access gates keep them healthy and safe. The remainder of the park is dedicated to dogs on lead so you can really treat your best friend to a day out.

5. Mawson Park, Hillarys

Nature play, shady trees and heaps of room to run and ride? – tick, tick, tick! Mawson Park features a naturally shaded nature playground with balance logs, a swing and mini rope course. On the other side of the park’s lake a large playground with multiple slides, swings and climbing frames will entertain the kids for hours.

Once they’ve mastered the playgrounds, kids can play and ride on the huge grassed areas while mum and dad fire up the BBQ.

6. Hillarys Beach Park, Hillarys (Whitfords Nodes Health and Wellbeing Hub)

Fitness fanatics rejoice! This list wouldn’t be complete without mention of the Health and Wellbeing Hub. The full transformation is now complete and includes a new fitness staircase, running tracks, outdoor exercise equipment, drink fountains, picnic shelters and park furniture, making this a place of fun and fitness the whole family can enjoy together.
