WA Pride on Show in Urban Couture 2020

‘Western Australian Born and Bred’ is the theme of the ninth edition of Urban Couture, the City of Joondalup’s dynamic fashion program, which runs from 13 April to 10 May 2020.

This year’s Urban Couture Ambassador is Perth-born international designer Kym Ellery, whose luxury womenswear label ELLERY was ‘born in Australia, made in Italy and based in Paris’.

Urban Couture 2020 will celebrate all things Western Australian with a dynamic program showcasing the talents of local, established and emerging designers, such as ELLERY.

The program runs over four weeks during April and May with each week focusing on different elements of the Western Australian fashion industry:

Monday 13 to Sunday 19 April 2020 | WA Designer featuring Kym Ellery

Monday 20 to Sunday 26 April 2020 | WA Sustainable Fashion

Monday 27 April to Sunday 3 May 2020 | WA Style

Monday 4 to Sunday 10 May 2020 | WA Theatre and Costume

Monday 13 April – Sunday 10 May 2020 | Wearable Art Exhibition at Lakeside Joondalup Shopping Centre*

*The City of Joondalup has partnered with the City of Mandurah to bring the Wearable Art Mandurah exhibition to the northern corridor of Perth.

Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob said the City was proud to carry on the tradition that Urban Couture has built for almost a decade supporting the Western Australian fashion industry.

“With some of Western Australia’s biggest and most popular retail spaces, Joondalup has become a destination for fashion,” Mayor Jacob said.

“This has coincided with Urban Couture bringing emerging fashion designers, photographers, textile artists and creative business entrepreneurs to the northern corridor.

“This year’s ‘Western Australian Born and Bred’ theme shifts the focus of the program to local fashion and costume designers, and we are thrilled to see a Perth-raised internationally-recognised talent in Kym Ellery coming on board as the program ambassador.

“Urban Couture continues to grow in stature with every year and we look forward to another successful program in 2020.”

Ms Ellery grew up in North Beach and as a child spent her time dreaming of creating a fashion brand.

Although she left her home town at the age of 18, her deep connection with Perth and its white sandy beaches never faded, even when studying at Central Saint Martins in London.

Fascinated by fashion and growing up with her mother who is an artist, Ms Ellery has developed an eye for volume, colour and style. These features are easily identifiable in her work as a designer today.

In 2007, Ellery founded her eponymous brand whilst being an editor for the Australian fashion magazine RUSSH. Making garments at that time started out as a hobby, but the positive response to her first collection was undeniable.

Celebrated for her structured designs and her vision of the modern woman, ELLERY is now an enterprise based in Paris, one of the three Australian labels officially recognised by the Paris Fashion Council – Federation Française de la Couture du Prêt-a-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode.

Ms Ellery said being the Urban Couture Ambassador is not only an honour, it is also a heart-warming invitation back home.

The 2020 Urban Couture program is proudly supported by major partners STM and Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City.
