Youth skate success

A record number of girls took part in the City’s Skate Park Festival Series 2019.

Eight girls were in contention for the final competition of the Festival Series with one taking out first place in the mixed gender skating competition for skaters aged 11 – 12 years.

A 13-year-old student from Ocean Reef was awarded both the Sportsmanship Award and third place in the girl’s open competition.

Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob said 150 youths, both local and from further afield, participated in the Festival Series competitions.

“Young people aged 11 to 25 years were invited to compete in the categories of BMX, skateboarding and scooter in four categories, 11-12 years, 13-16 years, 17+ and girls open,” he said.

“Our community really got behind the young competitors, with hundreds spectating to cheer them on.

“The feedback was excellent, and many families congratulated the City for staging a fantastic youth event.”

Three competitions were held in February at Carine, Kinross and Ocean Reef, while an additional BMX only competition was held at Shepherds Bush, Pump and Jump Track in Kingsley.
