RYDE Program – Regional Youth Driver Education

RYDE Driver ProgramWhen a young person has a driver’s licence they have greater access to employment, training and leisure activities.  The City has partnered with the RYDE program to offer accessible and supervised driving opportunities to young people aged between 16 and 25 in the northern corridor.

Young people can access the Joondalup RYDE Program to complete their 50 hours of supervised driving before receiving their provisional licence. Driving sessions (logbook hours only) are 90-minutes long and cost $15.00. Driving sessions start and finish at Joondalup Library. Some conditions apply.

How to get involved

Step 1 Do you meet the RYDE program criteria? If you want to get involved as a participant, first see whether you fit the following criteria:

  • 16-25 years old;
  • Hold a valid Learners Permit;
  • Have access to a valid Debit or Credit card (all payments for sessions are made through Pay Pal); and
  • Can get to Joondalup Library, 102 Boas Avenue for all RYDE driving sessions.
Step 2 Get in contact with a RYDE Provider Only a RYDE Provider can set you up as a participant of the program. Contact your nearest Provider and organise a sign-up appointment with one of their RYDE Support Workers. Make sure you bring the following information with you:

  • Learners permit;
  • Mobile number; and
  • Working email address.

A list of RYDE Providers is available on the RYDE website.

Step 3 Attend your sign-up appointment Meet with your RYDE Support Worker. They will sight your learners permit and show you an induction video explaining more about the RYDE program. They will also answer any questions you have about the program.

Your Support Worker will set you up with an online profile on the RYDE website. This is what you will use to book sessions with in the future.

Step 4 Book a RYDE assessment Once your online profile has been set up by your RYDE Support Worker, you will need to book a “RYDE Assessment” with one of our partnered Driving School’s. Your RYDE Support Worker can help you find all Driving School’s contact details on your online RYDE account.

The RYDE Assessment is compulsory and evaluates whether you possess skills for basic vehicle operation, have an understanding of road rules and generally do not pose a significant risk to other road users.

The RYDE Assessments cost approximately $70 (Driving School fees subject to change).

You must pass the RYDE Assessment before you can access RYDE driving sessions.

Step 5 Begin to book RYDE sessions Once you have passed your RYDE Assessment the Driving School will approve your account and you can then book RYDE sessions through your online RYDE account.

RYDE driving sessions cost $15 for a 90 minute session. Sessions are paid for using “RYDE Credits”  bought through your online RYDE account via PayPal. You must have a valid debit or credit card to purchase RYDE Credits. You can purchase via your existing PayPal account or as a guest.
