Recycling with Marian Green: Founder of St Nic’s Recycling Hub

Marian Green established the St Nic’s Recycling Hub in Duncraig at the beginning of 2022. The Hub collects large volumes of recyclables each month from the community, that may otherwise have ended up in landfill.

Putting waste in the right place

There are lots of recyclable materials that are not suitable to be placed into the recycling kerbside system and can be recycled through other sources. Since founding the Hub, Marian has worked hard in sourcing destination recyclers, running educational sessions with community groups, liaising with governments and interest groups, promoting the Hub through Facebook, and completing all the general administration tasks to keep the Hub running.

A “Green” community effort

Marian can’t remember a time when she wasn’t volunteering and helping the community. Her parents inspired her efforts as they were always volunteering for different organisations throughout their lives. What motivates Marian with her efforts at the Hub are the amazing people from the community that she meets each Hub day.

Marian believes we all have a responsibility to care for the planet, and creating St Nic’s Recycling Hub has been her way of upholding this responsibility and encouraging recycling throughout the community.

You can recycle at the Hub on the 3^rdSaturday of every month, 9am – 11am at St Nicolas Anglican Church, Cnr Poynter Drive & Beach Road, Duncraig.

What items can you recycle at the Hub?

Plastic lids and plastic bread tags.
Plastic plant pots and plant tags.
Oral care products.
Pens: including felt tips, highlighters, markers, mechanical pencils, correction tape, liquid paper.
Household batteries and printer cartridges.
E-waste and mobile phones.
Light globes.
Disposable razors.
Medication blister packs (with a donation to cover costs of recycling these).
Containers for Change: Donate your refund to St Nic’s by bringing along your 10c containers.

Marian’s tips for starting on your recycling journey

Start small and build your way up.

Choose one more recyclable to divert from landfill. Once it becomes a habit, pick one more and then repeat!

Get involved

If you have already nailed your recycling efforts at home and you want to further help recycling efforts for the community and the planet, residents can help out in many ways.

A few ideas from Marian include:

Start your own “Sub Hub”. These are recycling collection points within your community such as at a retirement village, childcare centre, school, sporting club or elsewhere. Collections are then brought to the St Nic’s Recycling Hub each month.
Own a café? You could collect milk bottles and soft drink bottle lids or containers and deliver them to the Hub regularly. You can also donate your coffee granules to local community gardens or via Sharewaste.
Prefer volunteering? St Nic’s Recycling Hub is always looking for people to help collect recyclables and deliver them to destination recyclers.

What is included in the City’s annual waste service?

The annual waste refuse charge for residents include:

Three-bin kerbside collection service.
Bulk hard waste collection. For further information, visit booking a bulk hard waste service webpage.
Bulk green waste collection (scheduled). For further information, visit bulk green waste webpage.
Garden organic waste vouchers – download your voucher on the City’s website.

What are the three bins used for?

Red for general household waste.
Lime green for green waste.
Yellow for recycling.

The City has aligned the waste service to the Australian Standard for bin lid colours. This is to aid source separation of waste and for each bin to be clearly identifiable.

What does the standard service look like?

One 140L (or upgraded 240L) red lid bin for general waste, emptied weekly.
One 240L yellow lid bin for recycling, emptied fortnightly.
One 240L lime green lid bin for garden organic waste, emptied fortnightly.

How does the kerbside collection service work?

Each week, a standard service will see a household present two bins on the verge for collection:

The general waste bin (red lid) and recycling bin (yellow lid), or
The general waste bin (red lid) and garden organic bin (lime green lid).

Why do I have three bins?

Give residents greater capacity for recycling garden organic waste in the lime green lid bin.
Reduces the environmental impacts of sending organic waste to landfills.
Reduce the impact of increasing landfill costs on the annual refuse charge to ratepayers.
Increases material recovery through the recycling bin.

My recycling bin is full every fortnight. What can I do?

The City offers a 50% larger recycling bin (360L) for free. Please complete the online form to register for the larger 360L recycling bin. If you are still generating a lot of recycling, you can also request an additional recycling bin by completing this online form. This can only be authorised by the property owner or agent (additional fees apply to annual rates).

I’m worried my waste won’t fit in the 140L general waste bin. What can I do?

Make sure all your recycling is placed in the yellow lid recycling bin and your green waste is placed in the lime green lid green waste bin. Come along to one of the City’s events where further information on how to reduce the waste created at home will be available. You can also upgrade the 140L general waste bin to a 240L bin (additional fees apply).

My 140L general waste bin is always full before collection day. What can I do?

The City encourages residents to become more sustainable and find ways to reduce the amount of waste they place in the waste bin. Households that have attempted to reduce their waste but still regularly overfill the 140L red lid general waste have the option to upgrade the 140L bin for a 240L general waste bin by completing the online form. Upgrades of the general waste bin can only be authorised by the property owner or agent (additional fees apply to annual rates).

Can I put my food waste in the garden organics bin?

No, the garden organics bin is for garden green waste only. Please only place loose garden organic waste in this bin.

My garden organics bin is full every fortnight. What can I do?

Additional green waste can be taken to the Wangara Greens Recycling Facility, 70 Motivation Drive, Wangara on Saturday – Sunday. This is a free service using a greens tipping voucher, which can be downloaded on the City’s website. Fees may apply without a valid voucher. You can also request an additional garden organics bin for your property by completing the online form. This can only be authorised by the property owner or agent (additional fees apply to annual rates).

Can I have a bigger garden organics bin?

No, as the weight limit on all bins is 70kg. Garden organic waste can be quite heavy, therefore the bin size is 240L in size. You can request an additional garden organics bin by completing the online form.

Electronic waste (e-waste) disposal

E-waste is old electronic technology which has been out dated or no longer needed such as televisions, computers, mobile phones etc. In fact, e-waste is the fastest-growing component of the municipal solid waste stream.

Disposal and Recycling of E-waste

E-waste is not permitted in the recycling bin (yellow lid). Domestic quantities of e-waste can be taken for free, seven days a week, 9.00am – 4.00pm, at these permanent facilities:

Recycling Centre – Balcatta, 238 Balcatta Road, Balcatta – 9345 8555.

The items you can drop off include:

Tips for using your recycling bin:

Keep recyclables loose and not in bags.
Flatten cardboard boxes and squash plastic bottles and cans.
Remove lids from all bottles, jars, containers – place lids in general waste bin.
Rinse items.
If you are filling up your recycling bin each fortnight, use the online form to apply for a FREE bigger 360L recycling bin.

Recycling Processing

The items you dispose of in your yellow lid recycling bin are taken to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) where they are separated into the different material type.

The separation of the recycling involves the items being put onto conveyor belts that are connected to sorting machines and separated into different materials such as; paper and cardboard, plastics, aluminium, steel and glass.

These materials are then shipped to the recycling plants to be re-made into new things. Some of the recycling plants are in Australia with others overseas, mostly in Asia.

Car battery and engine oil

Batteries, oil and other hazardous products must not be disposed of in household waste and recycling bins. These are considered Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and therefore must be taken to the correct drop off facility for processing and recycling.

There are several drop off centres that residents can continue to effectively and safely dispose of batteries and motor oils, free of charge:

Our Waste Education Officer is available to attend to your community group to offer a free interactive workshop or presentation on waste in the City of Joondalup. Suitable for all ages, we cover:

Waste Education In Schools

The waste education program for schools is curriculum aligned and delivered by professional educators.

The City of Joondalup’s sponsored waste educator for schools, Veolia, delivers The Recoverable program. The Recoverable program is:

- Free and presented by an experienced educator.
- Varies in duration depending on the lesson/s selected by the school.
- Adaptable for any age group from pre-school to Year six.
- Suitable for groups of up to 33 students.

Linked to geography and science content descriptors and the sustainability cross curriculum priority in the Australian Curriculum. Student outcomes include:

Donating to the libraries

Unwanted books, DVDs and CDs can be donated to the City libraries.

Items accepted include:

Fiction and nonfiction books such as novels, biographies, history, art craft and more
Music CDs and DVDs
Audiobooks on CD
Travel guides up to two years old
Textbooks and finance books up to two years old
Car manuals.

Items not accepted include:

Encyclopedias
Damaged, dusty, yellowed or tatty items
Brochures or pamphlets
Video tapes or cassettes
Magazines
Workbooks and personal journals.

If the item is of a local, or historical nature and suitable for inclusion in the local history collection it may be considered.

How to donate

Before donating, please check that your items are eligible for donation. Contact your most convenient library to arrange a time for staff to receive and discuss your donations. Donations are not accepted outside of opening hours.

Book sale

Some items may not be added to library stock and are set aside for library book sale which raises funds for the libraries’ literacy programs.

Please note the City’s libraries do not have the capacity to dispose of items in poor condition.
