Biodiverse Backyards Competition
Celebrate Biodiversity Month by increasing biodiversity in your backyard. Use our top tips to turn your garden environment into a haven for native fauna and flora.
Enter the competition by showing us a positive change you have made in your garden to increase biodiversity, then go into the draw to win a biodiversity prize pack!
Entries open from Monday 1 September-Friday 26 September 2025.
Biodiversity tips:
- Create habitat – learn how other sustainability superstars host wildlife in their gardens.
- Add a native tree – make the most of the City’s free verge tree program or the State government’s Treebate program.
- Provide fresh water – add a bird bath, create a frog pond or develop a rain garden.
- Plant native species – find native plant species that suit your area.
- Use organic fertiliser – check your soil type or visit the Fertilise Wise website.
- Provide shelter – join your local Friends Group to learn about homes for native wildlife and get involved with conservation.
- Create compost – learn from other green thumbs at your local community garden.
- Remove weeds – learn about common weed species and how to prevent their spread.
- Keep pets contained – protect our native wildlife through responsible cat and dog ownership.
Biodiverse events:
- Learn how even the smallest of garden spaces can host biodiversity with our Micro gardening Workshop on Saturday 6 September.
- Discover how unique our Birds of prey are, learn to identify them and what role they play in our environment on Monday 8 September.
- Follow the journey of pollination in an illuminated wonderland at Bloom Joondalup from Friday 26 September-Sunday 26 October.
The City of Joondalup (City) invites entries to the Biodiverse Backyards Competition 2025 (Competition) on the following Terms and Conditions.
- Entry to the Competition is free and open to residents and employees of the City that are residents who are aged 18 years and over.
- Entry to the Competition opens on Monday 1 September 2025, 9am and closes on Friday 26 September 2025, 5pm.
- Entries are limited to one submission per household.
- Late entries will not be accepted.
- A valid entry:
- Must be sent via email to enviro@joondalup.wa.gov.au
- Must include the entrant’s full name and physical address of the property in which the entrant resides.
- For the purposes of the Competition, a residential address must be located within the City and include either a verge garden, balcony, front yard garden or backyard garden.
- If a resident is renting the property, they must receive permission from the homeowner prior to undertaking any work for the Competition.
- Must comply with the City’s Verge and Crossover Guidelines.
- Must include at least one (1) photo of the garden prior to any work taking place, and no people should feature in the photo/s.
- Must include at least one (1) photo of the same garden following the work conducted, and no people should feature in the photo/s.
- The works to be undertaken are listed and outlined on the City’s webpage in relation to the Competition.
- Works undertaken must be of a sustainable nature, aimed at attracting and/or supporting native biodiversity within the entrant’s garden, and must have been undertaken during the month of September 2025.
- Sustainable activities may be conducted in either the entrant’s backyard garden, front yard garden, balcony or verge garden.
- The City takes no responsibility for the works undertaken by the entrants including any risks or costs associated with them.
- Gardens will be assessed and judged by the volume of sustainable gardening works undertaken and the potential diversity of species that the works will attract.
- The City’s selection of prize winners will be at the City’s absolute discretion and the judges’ decision shall be final.
- The judges will award four (4) separate winners with a prize of one (1) $250 Bunnings voucher each.
- The winner can claim their prize by collecting it from the City of Joondalup Administration Building, at 90 Boas Avenue, Joondalup.
- The City will announce the winners by Friday 24 October 2025 and will notify winners by email as provided by the entrants on their submission.
- The City may use details of the entrant’s name and suburb and entrant photographs for public promotional purposes including but not limited to advertisements, print media, website, social media and exhibition purposes.
- The City may take photographs of winners and their gardens and use these images for promotional purposes, including but not limited to social media, advertisements, print media and websites.
- The photograph(s) submitted with the entry will not be returned to the entrant.
- Entrants’ personal information and contact details will be collected and used for the purpose of conducting this Competition. By entering this Competition, entrants consent to use their contact details for the purposes described in this section. This information will be collected, processed, used and protected in accordance with the applicable data security and privacy laws.
- The City reserves the right to vary the terms of, or cancel, the Competition at any time without liability to any entrants or other person, subject to applicable laws.
- If participation is via Facebook/Instagram or if the Competition is promoted on Facebook/Instagram or any other social media platforms, the Competition is in no way sponsored, endorsed, administered by or associated with Facebook or Instagram and each entrant agrees to grant Facebook or Instagram (or any other social media platform) a complete release from any claims that they now have or may have in the future which relate to or are incidental to the Competition. Entrants acknowledge and agree that:
- any information they provide in connection with the Competition is provided to the City and not to Facebook, Instagram or any other social network; and
- any questions, comments or complaints regarding the Competition will be directed to the City, not to Facebook, Instagram or any other social media platform.
- Entrants agree that they have read and acknowledge their acceptance of these Terms and Conditions.
