The City of Joondalup has secured Federal Government support to build a state-of-the-art footbridge over Moolanda Boulevard in Kingsley.

This landmark project is set to transform local infrastructure and enhance community connectivity.

The new three-span steel and concrete pedestrian and cycleway bridge, designed to last for a century, will replace the previous 37-metre timber bridge, which was removed in September 2022 due to structural issues.

Key enhancements will include safety upgrades and enhanced lighting for better visibility. The project will also restore the 2.5km uninterrupted Robertson Road Cycleway, providing better access to local schools, businesses, and parks.

The City has secured $2.4 million in funding for this project under the Federal Government’s Thriving Suburbs Program.

It will complement the $1 million of funding for the project received by the City from the State Government, through Main Roads WA.

Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob, Councillor Phillip Vinciullo and City of Joondalup CEO James Pearson recently met with Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King in Canberra to discuss funding opportunities within the City.

Mayor Jacob said the Moolanda Boulevard bridge will make it safer and easier for people to enjoy local facilities and destinations in a more active way.

“The Robertson Road Cycleway is a strategic bike route linking the Principal Shared Path along the Mitchell Freeway and the Yellagonga Regional Park, and the bridge over Moolanda Boulevard is a critical component of the cycleway,” Mayor Jacob said.

“Replacing the previous bridge has been a priority for the City as we are determined to attract people of all ages and abilities to partake in active transport, improving community health and wellbeing, and providing safe and sustainable connections between the built and natural environment.

“The City greatly appreciates the support of the Federal Government through the Thriving Suburbs Program to assist in delivering this important project for the local community.”

Minister King said: “The Thriving Suburbs Program supports local organisations, such as the City of Joondalup, with the funding they need to build better cities and more liveable suburbs.

“Investing in the Moolanda Boulevard footbridge will make a real difference for the people of Kingsley and the wider suburbs by supporting community infrastructure, bringing people together and increasing local amenity.”

The tender for construction of the footbridge was advertised on Saturday 8 February 2025 and closes on Tuesday 11 March 2025.

Submissions will then be assessed and a report prepared for the consideration of the Joondalup Council to award the tender at its May 2025 meeting.

Site works are currently scheduled for July 2025 with construction expected to take about six months to complete, subject to material and contractor availability.
