The City of Joondalup has officially opened the upgraded 5km coastal shared path between Mullaloo and Hillarys.

The project has delivered a safer and more enjoyable experience for thousands of people who walk, wheel or ride along this popular stretch of coastline each week.

The new path runs from the corner of Northshore Drive and Merrifield Place in Mullaloo to Northside Drive at Hillarys Boat Harbour. It replaces the previous 3m-wide path with a new, wider 4m red asphalt surface, improving accessibility and comfort.

The project complements recent upgrades at Tom Simpson Park in Mullaloo and other sections of the coastal shared path.

Coastal vegetation clearing was kept to a minimum, and new conservation fencing has been installed to protect the natural environment.

The works were funded as part of the State Government’s Hillarys Cycle Network Expansion project, with the City of Joondalup continuing its strong commitment to active transport infrastructure.

Since 2016, the City has partnered with the State Government to co-fund and construct approximately 17km of new red asphalt shared paths under the WA Bicycle Network Grants program, with an additional 9km delivered in partnership with other state agencies.

Joondalup Mayor Daniel Kingston said the upgraded path is a major win for the community and visitors alike.

“This is more than just a path, it’s a gateway to our incredible coastline and a symbol of our commitment to creating a connected, healthy and sustainable City,” Mayor Kingston said.

“Whether you’re walking with friends, riding to work, or enjoying a family outing, this new path makes it easier and safer for everyone to experience the beauty of our coast, and I encourage the community to get out there and enjoy it.”

Hillarys MLA Caitlin Collins said the new path is a fantastic addition to the local area.

“Our stunning coastline is a source of pride for the Hillarys community, and this upgraded shared path will be a tremendous drawcard and asset,” Ms Collins said.

“I’m pleased the State Government continues to invest in projects that promote active lifestyles and ensure our coastline remains a premier destination for recreation.”
